That was a big weekend in Atlanta…that I had to miss at the last minute. Nope, I’m not happy about it at all, either. The biggest expense in the Moto Media game is travel. When we looked at the schedule for this year’s Supercross season, these two weeks stood out for a couple reasons.

  1. Sweet, Atlanta was to host ‘Motofest’ which meant 3 days of racing at the same venue: Amsoil Arenacross Friday, Monster Energy Supercross Saturday, and Amateur Supercross Sunday. That’s the kind of weekend a would-be moto journalist can really get behind! Tons of coverage with minimal travel. But wait…
  2. Then Toronto…
  3. THEN Daytona. Really? We are expected to go Atlanta, Toronto, then Daytona?! That sucks. Daytona hosts the Ricky Carmichael Amateur SX after the Pro racing, so you know you want to be there.

OK, so there are 3 races that we really want and need to be at. Sure, it was easy when they put Atlanta and Dayton back-to-back because we could justify the one-time travel down the I-75 to be at both of them, and then hit some practice tracks during the week where tons of Canadians are riding.

Well, something had to give this year and it was Atlanta. We just couldn’t justify the travel time and money to go up and down from Toronto to the south east twice in two weeks. It would have killed me AND the #DMXVan. Yes, my less than 2 year old van is about to turn 100K already.

Man, why doesn’t he just fly, it would be much easier and a lot faster?” Once I pick myself up from the floor after a laughing fit, I’ll answer that….

We aren’t dealing with the kind of budgets they are down in the USA. With 1/10th the population we get 1/20 the budget. If you don’t think we would prefer to park at an airport, hop on a plane, rent a car, and sleep in a nice hotel every week, you’re sadly mistaken. Of course we would! There’s nothing we like more than being at and reporting on Canadians racing…nothing.

No, you didn’t come here to hear me complain about my ‘dream job’ problems, but sometimes it needs to be pointed out that when we aren’t at a certain race, it’s NOT because we don’t care, it’s because we just couldn’t be there.

In fact, Julien Perrier from Team PR-MX even grabbed an extra hotel room in Atlanta so we could split the cost and I left him hanging for it! I owe you a public apology for that one, Julien. Sorry about that. His team of Kyle Swanson, Lane Staley, and maybe Cody Gilmore will be at the Houston Friday night for the autograph session.

There was so much Canadian Content to report on in Atlanta that it killed me to sit here and miss it. On Friday, the Canadian-backed Rockstar OTSFF Yamaha team absolutely killed it at the Amsoil Arenacross! Team rider, #2 Chris Blose, won both 250 AX main events. Teammate, #101 Matt Goerke, finished 2nd and 3rd.

On Saturday, Canadian KTM Canada Parts Canada Thor rider, #72 Cole Thompson, was set to enter the 250 East SX series after missing round 1 in Minneapolis. Also, Canadian-backed Team PR-MX Strikt Kawasaki was there with riders #313 Kyle Swanson, #740 Lane Staley, and #374 Cody Gilmore.

And yesterday was the Amateur SX with a few Canadians making an appearance. I saw Canadian #664 Kieran Doherty (14th Heat 2/11th LCQ 250B, 10th Amateur All-Stars, Open B 17th Heat 1/7th LCQ) was back in action after his injury. Full results can be found at the Amsoil Arenacross site HERE.

Actually, now that I’ve looked through the Amateur results, I think Kieran may have been the only Canadian racing, so I’m glad I chose Daytona!

Here are some of the results from the weekend:

Friday Night Autograph Signing Added to Toronto Supercross Festivities!

PRO RIDER SUPERCROSS AUTOGRAPH SESSION FRIDAY NIGHT 6-8pm

When all is said and done in #Atlanta, the series heads north…. The Great White North. And that means you need to make your way to The Houston Avenue Bar and Grill on Yonge Street in downtown #Toronto Friday night.

We have a great facility, great swag, great company and now we will have great riders there to sign autographs and take pictures. Co-organizers, Cade Clason and Alex ray, have an amazing evening planned out for everyone. Wait a minute….these two may be able to run the PulpMX show, but for these parties we have left it in the very capable hands of David V Toye.

Come meet 2016 Canadian MX2 champion and #72 250 East Supercross competitor, Cole Thompson, Friday night at the Houston | Bigwave photo

Once again, David has worked very hard to give party goers the best possible time. Be sure to bring some extra money to support Team Canada, as our leader, Kourtney Lloyd, will be in the house all weekend selling tickets.

Probably the most important thing, and we can’t stress this enough, is that the parties are open to everyone and if you don’t waste your time getting there after the race, you will have no problem getting in. Also, if you’re in town early, show The Houston some love and grab some food there. You won’t be disappointed.

OK, have a great week. Next thing we know, we’ll all be in Toronto celebrating all things moto as we bench race at the #1 event of the year, the DMX Toronto Supercross Parties at the Houston Bar and Grill! DOn’t forget, we’ve added an autograph signing session to the schedule this year, so make sure you plan to be there Friday night between 6-8 to hang out and grab some Supercross memorabilia, too.

If Ryan Villopoto were still racing, he’d be there! See you at the races… | Bigwave photo
