Catching Up with...Tucker Hibbert
Photos by James Lissimore
Snowmobile legend Tucker Hibbert likes to dabble in the motocross world from time to time and he’s pretty damm good at it. The Minnesota native has come up to Canada over the last few years and raced the odd CMRC national with pretty good results. Last season he won three out of the four motos that he entered and then continued on his selected events schedule which included some AMA Nationals. Hibbert, who gets teased by his training partner Andrew Short about being half-Canadian, seems to enjoy himself racing whenever he comes up and this weekend will mark his debut in Canada again. I tracked him down for a few words.
DMX: Hey Tucker, I haven’t seen you at any AMA stuff this year, what have you been up to?
Tucker Hibbert: I’ve been riding some local races in Minnesota and training a bit. I set my schedule about six months ago which includes five AMA nationals and one Canadian national which is this week in Morden, Manitoba. I just kind of picked which races I wanted to do and that gives me some time to get ready, get off the snowmobiles and get all that put away. It’s now onto the races and I’ve been hanging out and getting my program set up to start motocross again.
How did the sno-cross stuff go for you this year?
It went really, really good. We ended up winning all the national events that we did and we won the X-Games. It was great and really could’ve gone any better.
Have you been following the CMRC series at all?
A little bit but I haven’t been following the AMA races that well either. I haven’t seen any of them on SPEED TV for some reason. As far as Canada, I heard that Dean Wilson
has been killing them up there, the MX2 guys must be frustrated.
Hibbert last year at Regina where Beaton was beating him but then crashed. Just kidding Tucker, we have a little argument going whenever we see each other. He says he was just biding his time. |
So you have the same program going on this year?
Yep, I’ll be riding the MX2 class again and all my same sponsors that I had last year have followed me again. I’m on my own program in the MX2 class and then in the 250 class in the states.
What are the expectations for you Tucker? Win or bust?
Yeah, I mean I’m definitely hoping that I can win up there. Last year I won at Morden and I’m hoping to repeat that again. I feel good with my speed and fitness. I’m as strong or stronger in that department then I was last year so let’s hope that history repeats itself. We’ll see how things go, last year I did the Texas round before the Morden round and worked all the bugs out but this year Morden will be my first race so hopefully we have our ducks in a row and it goes well.
You like the Morden track?
Yeah, Morden is a really good track. It just depends on the weather, because two years ago when it rained it was the muddiest race I’ve ever seen in my life but last year the track was perfect. It got just the perfect amount of rain, so I guess it depends on the moisture situation because last year the track was perfect.
So this is it for you, you’re one and only Canadian moto appearance?
Yep, last year I did Morden and Regina and those were the two closest races for me but with Regina off the schedule it left me with only Morden. I then go to the AMA races and do some of those and try and get my results better down here. I want to get a little better number.
