Catching Up with...Nick May
Photos by Dan "Not Lissimore" Stenning
Nick May was the Sand De Lee winner of the DMX Factory Rider for a Day and he went into his home track with the goal of beating our first FRFAD, Kyle Ward, score of finishing nineteenth in a moto at Gopher Dunes. He was ably assisted by the man-friend we provided him, Dan Stenning, some gear from FXR Racing, tires from Dunlop, oil from Maxima, shirts from Roost Clothing, shiny new graphics from Podium Graphix, CTI Canada jumped on board, a story in IMX magazine and Ignition Racing played the biggest role with providing a van and all the tools to go out and give’er poop.
Well, it didn’t quite happen the way Nick wanted it to but hey, we were there for him and are pumped with his attitude and as he explains below, there are some legit reasons why he went 30-29. I say blame it on Stenning but Nick wouldn’t go there. This weekend in Walton, our final selector Jared Stock will be the next guy to get the “factory” treatment.
DMX: Nick, take us through your day at SDL as the DMX Factory Rider for a Day.
Nick May: It went alright, I didn’t do as good as I hoped to do. Last year I was getting points at this time but I’m off the pace right now. I guess the stiffer competition and going through two surgeries doesn’t help. Anyways, I went 30-29 and I got some decent starts. I was around fifteenth or so and the top twenty guys are so ridiculously fast, it’s not funny. Towards the end of the moto, I was getting tired- I had a cold but no excuses- and the guys were getting me. I had fun though, the track is quite different from when we practice on it. They added some different sections and stuff like that.
How was the FRFAD program and having Dan Stenning there to help?
Oh man, that part was great. He was a great man-friend and helped a lot. He did everything he could to help me and did what he could. He did lie to me and say he couldn’t change tire but he’s way better than me at it.

How about just being part of the program and getting free stuff?
Oh yeah, you guys hooked me up large. I calculated it and I probably got over a thousand bucks of free stuff. It was cool doing photo shoots and stuff like that, before my moto we had the lights out and it was nice to get the extra attention.
Back to Dan, what do you think he could’ve done better to maybe push you over the top and get you better finishes? I’m looking for dirt here…
Ummm, I’m not sure. I thought he would’ve at least thrown some rocks at the riders in front of me but he didn’t. My rear wheel almost fell off after changing tires and we couldn’t figure out who left it loose.
Trust me, I’ve been there. The rider is always right-therfore Dan almost killed you.
Yeah, let’s say it was him.
|As you can tell by the sand on his front plate, Nick wasn't up front.
Why does Stenning always shoot vertical pics? I just don't know.
How’s Walton going for you?
Pretty good, I just rode my first 450 practice and the track is cool. I’d never ridden a 450 on it before. I’m going to ride all three intermediate classes here and then see how it goes. I might ride the 450 pro class this weekend. We’ll see at the end of the week how I feel.
Thanks a lot Nick…
Hey are you doing anymore podcasts lately? The last one I heard was Byrne…
Oh man, there’s a lot more on there now, you’re probably like six behind. There’s Stewart, Reed, Tedesco and some others.
Yeah, I gotta get those on my IPOD.
Thank you and thanks to Dan, DMX and all the sponsors for the free stuff.
