Welland County Motorcycle Club opens MX practice track
The Welland County Motorcycle Club has been promoting motorcycling and motorcycle racing since 1946. That long haul is probably part of the reason why the Niagara area has always been dirt bike crazy. When I grew up here, all we did in high school was eat, breathe and live dirt bikes. The thing is, no legitimate motocross track ever stuck around for very long. There were places to trail ride, but zoning problems, noise complaints and general disinterest in motocross from the scores of trail riders in Niagara always resulted in motocrossers heading ouside the region to race and practice.
That exodus may be changing, thanks to the Welland County Motorcycle Club. Building a motocross track on the club grounds has been discussed for decades, but now for the first time a fun little practice track sits adjacent to their famous 1/4 mile dirt oval. Designed to be a safe place to practice and introduce new riders to the sport, their rolling track is entertaining to ride yet small enough to be reasonable to maintain for club members.
The track operates under CMRC insurance, with a reasonable $20 fee for riders. Plans are to run until the snow flies, when the club members go into an ice racing frenzy. The motocross track is a work in progress, but the club has been busy making continual improvements this fall. It's up, it's running and it's fun! Finally we have a legitimate motocross track in Niagara!

Dirt track racing is no longer the only kind of action at Niagara Motorcycle Raceway. It's still cool though!

There are no blind or 'do or die' leaps on the novice- friendly track.

Located just outside of Welland, the Club property was already zoned for motorcycle racing.

WCMC's Ryan Rainville says future plans include lenthening the track and mixing more sand and wood chips into the clay base.

The WCMC grounds have camping, washroom and food facilities on site.

Just a short distance from Welland's East Side Trail system, the WCMC track is also a great home base for a day of trail riding.

The Welland County Motorcycle Club is famous for ice racing on the Welland Canal each winter.

The hilly little track is entertaining for experienced riders, but fun and safe for beginners.
It's been a long time coming, but it's here; a place to ride motocross in Niagara!
