Xtinction II Preview
Xtinction. Just the name sends shivers down the spines of off-road racers. After a very successful event in 2010, Xtinction is back and bigger than ever. The Corner Grass Race Team has invested hundreds, if not thousands of hours putting together this year’s event, including heavyweight sponsor Red Bull on board. The purse is up from last year, now totaling $10000 with $5000 going to the winner. The rider entry list is also improved, with around sixty racers signed up for the extreme enduro. The big news concerning the riders is that Graham Jarvis, Mike Brown, Kyle Redmond and Nick Fahringer are all here to compete. Add in Canadian talent like Bobby Prochnau, Jason Schrage, Shane Cuthbertson, Geoff Nelson, and Ben Rego and it’s anyone’s game. The only entry missing is last year’s winner, Cory Graffunder. Cory broke his wrist recently and will be out for a while.
I’ve been out here since Thursday, checking out the scene. Yesterday was spent at the Graham Jarvis riding school, then today I spent a good portion of the afternoon at the media photo shoot. Everything looks set for a great race tomorrow, so I’ll let the photos do the talking...
|Dinosaur fossils on a dirt bike course? Only at Xtinction!|
CGRT held an extreme enduro riding school, instructed by Graham Jarvis.
Jarvis' skill on a motorcycle is incredible. He treats his Husaberg TE300 more like a trials bike than an enduro machine.
The weather is great and things are shaping up for an incredible event. Climbing this hill on foot was only possible with assistance from a rope. Imagine riding up it!
|Jason Schrage broke his arm during the media shoot today and is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning. It's a shame, since Schrage was hoping to repeat his podium from last year.|
Canada's first lady of off-road, Victoria Hett, is the only woman competing at Xtinction. Here Hett works on her mountain climbing skills while checking out the course.
Bobby Prochnau tried some crazy lines during the media shoot. Some were successful, others ended like this.
The talk of the pits is Graham Jarvis, and his incredible skills on a motorcycle. Jarvis is a favorite for the win tomorrow.
