Frid'Eh Update #35 Presented by FXR Racing
Week #35 goes to Jaromir 'JR' Romancik.
Week #35 goes out to the friendly rider from the Czech Republic, Jaromir Romancik. We got to know Jaromir a couple years ago when he rode for the RTR Performance team out of Kamloops, BC under Craig Fortune. I remember being impressed by his speed at the Kamloops round of the nationals, but he fell hard and broke his leg. That fall kept him out of action for the remainder of the series.
In 2012, he headed to the first round at The Wastelands in Nanaimo, BC and had a very strong first moto, finishing 5th. He took 16th in the second moto for 11th overall. He then went to the next round at Wild Rose MX Park in Calgary, AB and finished 38-9 for 14th overall.
Those two rounds were enough to get earn him the #35 for 2013. I haven’t been able to get in touch with him to find out what he’s been up to this past year, but will keep trying and have an update posted here on DMX as soon as we can.
Thanks, Billy, and what a week it’s been. Right home from the Parts Canada Walton TransCan to a few days in my own bed and back to Madoc for the 3rd Annual MMRS National. First off, hats off to the Walton crew for putting on a great event. It was a good time had by all and the great racing was just a small staple into it all. I have to give compliments to all participants and especially Dylan Wright and Westen Wrozyna who no doubt were the biggest show of the week and had the crowd on their feet every moto. It was truly spectacular to look at these two youngsters and you just know that both of them will be competing for Canadian (or maybe even US?) titles down the road.
To top the week off two Pro champions were crowned in Brett Metcalfe and Austin Politelli. The Leading Edge Kawasaki team clearly brought their A-game this season and was able to back up both titles to make it two years in a row for the team. How cool was it to see Shawn Maffenbeier take his first moto win and professional overall. Shawn is a first-class guy and he deserved that win. It was another moment in Canadian motocross history that I am happy to say I was there to see.
As I mentioned, I am up in Madoc, Ontario, for the MMRS National. It is a fun event that is now in its third year and growing every year and keeps getting better. There is a 30,000 dollar purse this weekend and pros like Kyle Keast, Jeremy Medaglia, Cole Thompson, Jesse Wentland, Liam O’Farrell, Eric Jeffery, Dylan Kaelin, Donald Turner and more have come out to take their shot at the purse. The track is prepped to perfection and many changes have been made and so far in practice the changes have been welcomed with open arms. It is great to see a club like MMRS giving back to the sport this much.
I will apologize for our short updates lately. The last two weeks have been a little crazy between being at events and posting other content. Make sure you check out all the Walton ontent and keep your eyes peeled here all week for Madoc photo reports and videos as well.
Ok back to you Billy...
Thanks, Kyle. I would also like to start out with an apology for the rather limited Frid'Eh Updates these past couple weeks. We have been swamped trying to cover the Nationals and then the TransCan all last week. It really didn't leave much time to dig for stories or do anythying other than edit photos and post Photo Reports. Don't worry, once the season ends I'll get back to pestering all our riders on a weekly basis. I just know they're excited to hear that.
Well, let's get right to it. The 2013 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals are done. We headed into this one with all the usual expectations and bench-racing that we go in with every year. Yes, there was a new fast guy coming up to challenge our best, but he would have to ride new tracks, race riders he didn’t know, ride for a team he didn’t know, etc. etc. etc. Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki rider, Brett Metcalfe, came, saw, and kicked some ass. I’ll go out on a bench-racing limb of my own and say that had Red Bull Royal Distributing Fox KTM rider, Colton Facciotti, not gotten hurt in Kamloops, we would have seen a different series this year.
You thought the #9 looked weird on Colton Facciotti's bike? Well, wait until 2014 when he shows up with a big #45! (That was my first racing number, so...)
That’s right, I said it. I think Facciotti would have had more than enough speed and experience to take the title this year. Remember some of the margins he won by in seasons past over many of the same riders competing today? No? Well, let’s just say that there were races where he won by at least 45 seconds over Dusty Klatt who was ahead of the 3rd place rider by almost a minute! I blame Colton for robbing us of what should have been the most exciting race for wins ever here in Canada! Of course I’m kidding about blaming Colton. Motocross is the toughest sport on earth and these things are an unfortunate but very real part of the whole deal. Colton seems to be healing well (although that finger still looks a little tender) and should be back at it before you know it.
Anyway, you can file that argument away with the rest of the ‘coulda shoulda wouldas.’ We will just never know. Actually, having said that, there is a rumour going around that we may just see Metcalfe back here crossing Canada in 2014. I don’t think anyone will really commit to confirming this, but it sets us up for yet another round one of huge expectations and excitement. There was also talk that a certain 2012 national champ may be back as well. Yikes, 2014 just got better and we are just putting this one to bed!

With how busy we were at the Parts Canada Walton TransCan last week, I completely forgot to talk about the sole Canadian competing on the world stage over in the Czech Republic – Kade Tinkler-Walker. Kade lined up at the FIM World Junior Championships a couple weeks back and did Canada very proud. As you probably know, Kade has been over in Europe for the past while traveling across Europe on what has got to be the coolest moto adventure any 15-year-old could ever imagine. He rides on the Bertino Castellari-owned Team Castellari Racing on a Suzuki 125 2-stroke. We've been posting the videos of his races whenever Kade's dad, Dave, sends them over to us. He sent over these two links to videos of the even that Vurb Moto put together:
Here are the results from the races:
Jorge ZARAGOZA BELTRAN
Lorenzo Jose LOCURCIO

Congratulations, Kade. That must have been an amazing event. You held it together over some seriously fast up-and-coming riders and should be very proud. I apologize for not giving this even the coverage it deserved. You were the sole Canadian over there and it looks like you represented yourself and us very well while in the Czech Republic. Keep up the good work and don’t forget to take the time to soak up every experience you can while touring Europe racing dirt bikes. You will have these memories for the rest of your life!
If you’re a motocrosser looking for something a little different to try this weekend, why not head over to Gopher Dunes. Check out this Press Release for the big Enduro event this weekend:
This weekend Gopher Dunes in Courtland, ON will host the opening rounds of the 2013 Royal Distributing Canadian Cross Country Championship - East. This double header will also be points paying rounds 4 & 5 of the Wiesner Insurance Ontario Cross Country Championship.
Because this is a National event it’s important to get all the best racers out so WEC will be accepting all Canadian and US race licenses (CMRC, WEC, TVR, PNWMA, AMSA, Off Road Ontario, CMX, AMA, etc). The course at Gopher will consist of the full motocross track and the majority of their fast flowing trail system.
To keep the Eastern Pro's honest Honda Canada is bringing Alberta's Jason Schrage to compete. Jason finished second overall in the West behind KTM's Bobby Prochanu - at two of the western rounds they were seconds apart after over 100km of racing! With the eastern events at Gopher Dunes then Walton on Sept 7 & 8 on courses based around full MX tracks it will be exciting to see how Jason's western speed will work against the MX trained eastern Pro's like KTM's Josh Long, Yamaha's Adam Millson and Brian Wojnarowski.
Saturday's event will feature the Moto Cross Country format - 2 one hour motos - and Sunday will be the classic format with all classes racing for 2 hours (2.5 for Pro). Lots of seat time for all competitors! There will be prizes from series sponsors Royal Distributing, Parts Canada, Red Bull, Goldentyre, Emperor Racing and Rekluse.
Please note that Saturday and Sunday are seperate races with podium presentations for all classes from Pee Wee to Pro taking place within an hour of the completion of the day. Racing starts at 9am for Pee Wee, 9:30 for Mini, 11am for first full sized bikes. See our website for more details.
Transponders will be available at sign in for rent ($20) or purchase ($40).
Gopher Dunes offers basic camping in the pits (no water or power) and gates will be open Friday evening.
Camping fees are $15. per vehicle per night & general gate admission is $5. per vehicle per day.
Campfires are allowed in raised fire-pits only....you must provide your own fire-bowl plus firewood & clean-up all debris afterwards.
World Enduro Canada would like to thank all our series sponsors for their strong support of this National Series - Royal Distributing, Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Husaberg, Red Bull, Emperor Racing, Goldentyre, Rekluse, Parts Canada, Wiesner Insurance, Inglis Cycle, Langs Off Road and West Coast Transportation.
I did two of these events back in the day and can say that although I absolutely hated it while I was in the middle of the three-hour, late-October mud-fest, I look back at them with fond memories and seem to have been able to only remember the fun. It’s weird how the brain can do that.
Has everyone seen that Rick 'Hammertime' Hamer-Jackson has put MX Forum up for sale? Well, if you haven't, here's the link to the thread over there at the Pink Palace. Hammer goes through these little bouts from time to time so you never really know how serious he is or what he has up his business-savvy sleeve. Stay tuned on this one... If you're looking to have some fun and compete from the sidelines for the upcoming AMA Supercross series, why not sign up for a little 'fantasy league' action? Here's a link to a good one for you to get involved in over at Supercross Players. It's the final round of the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship out in Lake Elsinore, CA. It's hard to belive they don't have a Labour Day Weekend race this year with Steel City off the schedule. Good luck to everyone who is heading out there to make a final impression on potential race teams for the upcoming indoor season. John Maguire's MMRS Madoc National takes place this weekend. Bigwave photo I'm about to hit the road and head east of Toronto for the 3rd Annual MMRS Madoc National. I made it out to this one last year and was very impressed with the organization and excitement. They've really got a good thing going over there and this year should be no exception as several top-flight riders will be there going for all the cash. If you're looking for one more chance to see these top Pros race, get over to Madoc for the Saturday-Sunday race schedule to check them out. You may not see this caliber of Canadian racing for quite some time. Jeremy Medaglia was the big winner in 2012. The year before it was Cole Thompson. I think they'll both be there this year! Bigwave photo Ok, I'm trying to decide whether to take the back roads around Toront to my parents' like my old man does or wait a while until the Friday night traffic dies down. Either way, thanks for reading and watch for these things to gain some momentum as the season winds down and we have more time to pester our riders. Have fun and be safe wherever you're riding or racing this weekend. See you at the races...
