Bowkervision: Gopher Dunes
The first stop on the eastern leg of the CMRC Nationals was run on Sunday under almost perfect conditions for racing. Not too hot, not too sunny.
#41 Dylan Kaelin is coming back from a separated shoulder and wasn't 100% sure how he was going to do riding in the deep rutted sand of Gopher. After the track had set up and rutted pretty good, he was 11th fastest in MX2 qualifying. He finished in 11th OA (12-12).
#17 Jeremy Medaglia ripped off the fastest lap in the same Qualifier with a 1:47.9 on his 6th time past the finish line.
The finish line had quite the lip on it for Sundays race. #129 Nathan Bles shows the crowd in practice a whip that should have got style points.
Ricky Carmichael was on hand signing autographs on everything from hats to bicycles. The lineups were large every time he showed up at the booth with a marker in hand.
You can always tell when it's starting to get really rough out there when the orange soil starts turning up in the bottom of the ruts.
#129 Jay Burke is back on the National tour for the eastern swing. He qualified 16th fastest in MX1 with a 1:56.1. He DNF'd moto one and went 16th in the secont moto for 20th OA.
Frank has the best watering system I've seen in Canada. You can't get much easier than opening a couple valves and firing up the irrigation pump to water the track. Water truck + sand = stuck.
#27 Kaven Benoit ran very well and finished 3rd both motos for 3rd OA. Maier was running 2nd for a bit with Rife bringing up the rear in this photo.
#76 Shawn Rife takes a face full of roost in the first MX2 moto. Maiers overall at the end of the day didn't reflect how hard he rode. A couple mistakes in the 1st moto really put him back in the pack. (16-4 = 8th OA)
Twitterer extraordinaire Chris Pomeroy keeps everyone updated race day with constant updates from the pit and track.
In between motos, while the podium presentations were going on there was a Schoolboy exhibition race. It was quite an eye opener for the kids as they got to ride probably the deepest rutted, most whooped out track they will ride for awhile. Those little 2 strokes got eaten up in some of those holes.
One of the youngest riders for Orange Motorsports, #81 Nicholas Wieringa tries his luck on the rough track in the Schoolboy race. He went 2-2 for 2nd OA in Saturdays 85cc 12-16 race.
#9 Keast and #1 Colt were the front runners through the first corner, and for the majority of the first MX1 race.
#620 Brad Nauditt an American out of Spokane Washington ran strong and originally finished 9th in the first MX1 moto. But after all the penalties were handed out to various top 10 riders for passing on medical flags, Brad ended up 6th. Which after his 13th finish in the second moto, left him in 8th OA.
#71 Brandon Phinney ran well and stayed consistently just out of the top 10 for a 12th OA (11-14). Some of the bales around the track suffered the wrath of the 450's power.
Colton splits some lappers on the front rollers as he marched his way around the track, lapping all the way up to 6th in the first moto.
#3 Bobby Kiniry worked his way up near the front in the first race, only to be docked and scoring a 15th. His second moto went more to plan and finished 5th for 10th OA.
#135 Josh Demuth had a nasty wreck, that I'm sure you've all read about by now. Hopefully see him at St.Julie this weekend or back in for Moncton next weekend.
You've also heard about what happened to Keast. He took the disappointment remarkably well. It was a racing deal.
#17 Jeremy worked his way up to his brother #5 Tyler who was leading the race. In the last couple laps, he got this close many times. If it weren't for a lapper on the last lap things could have gotten pretty interesting in a hurry. They finished 20 seconds ahead of 3rd.
#2 Dusty Klatt inadvertently uses #552 Freddy Karrle as a berm when he blew his out a little. Dusty ran hard and kept up on the points by ending up 2nd OA (2-4).
I'm a little heavy on the Keast content here, please bare with me. He had an awesome ride, what can I say.

Palms was right on the money with his tweet about the Dozer last weekend. Nobody seems to have anything for Colt this season, but Keast kept pace with him, which is a feat in itself. No question he rode well enough for second overall, too bad his equipment dictated otherwise.
