There was lots of excitement going into the opening round this weekend of the Monster Energy CMRC Motocross Nationals that kicked off at the Wastelands track in Nanaimo B.C. The new teams showed off their new bikes, rigs and colors and some of the speculation was getting laid to rest over who would be fast. Then it rained! It rained hard on and off for six hours leaving the track a mess and the riders simply fighting for survival. Here's a look at some of the action James Lissimore
caught through his camera.
The mud made a mess of everything! Here we see Jason Moore of Fox Canada taking care of his rider Jeremy Medaglia's helmet after a muddy moto.
Teddy Maier is back in MX2 this year and he also took the overall win this weekend. Here he is with his mechanic, Pat O'Connor, ready to go.
Kyle Beaton showed everyone he still has what it takes to compete for a championship. He got the first moto holeshot, almost the second moto hole shot, and took second overall on the day with a 2-6.
These pink Troy Lee Designs grips may have been the good luck charm for Jared Allison. He used these grips to help get him to a third overall on the day.
Jeremy Medaglia dominated the first moto. The second moto didn't go so well for him. After a bad start, he found himself later tangled up with Topher Ingalls in a corner and both the riders had difficulty getting their bikes up and going.
In MX2 moto 1 all three Allison Brothers (Jared, Parker, and Bryton) started in the top 5. It was a cool sight to see.
Topher Ingalls showed some serious speed this weekend. He is going to be a podium threat every weekend.
OTSFF Rockstar Yamaha rider, Richard Grey, had a good and bad weekend. After running 4th on the last lap of moto 1 he got a rear flat that basically came off the rim and was unable to finish the moto. He was running top 5 in moto 2 and was able to hang on for a 10th in. The new and improved Richard Grey is looking to make an impact this year.
Jared Allison was all smiles at the end of the day. It was a great weekend for his team and family with his 3rd overall and Parker's 5th.
Ryan Abrigo had a great first moto taking 3rd. He had some difficulties in the second one and only mustered a 20th place finish.
Two moto holeshots for Matt Goerke. In conditions like these, there is no better place to be than out front!
Shawn Maffenbeier and the entire Yamalube Yamaha team started out the season with good results heading into round two.
Jaromir 'JR' Romancik is back this year and contesting the MX1 class. He took a strong 5th in moto 1, but struggled a bit in the second for 11th on the day.
Rockstar OTSFF Yamaha rider, Bobby Kiniry's weekend was exciting, to say the least. After having to locate his luggage and race gear, he raced to strong 3-3 finishes for 3rd overall.
Washington's Tyler Villopoto showed he has the speed to go with his great style. He finished 6-8 for 6th and was in the mix all day.
Red Bull KTM rider, Dusty Klatt, did not have the kind of muddy island day we've come to expect. His spirits were still up with his 12-6 7th overall day.
Kyle Keast charged hard both motos and went 4-4 on the day. Look for him to turn the heat up a bit next weekend in Kamloops. He and Kiniry were close in both motos.
Shawn Maffenbeier was able to go 8-13 on the day for 10th overall even after getting a flat tire. Shawn is capable of top 5 finishes week in and week out.
It likely wasn't easy for Colton Facciotti to get second this weekend. Don't write him off yet. He looks great on his KTM and will not be letting anyone else walk away with his #1 plate.
Redemption Racing Kawasaki rider, Gavin Gracyk, finished 11-7 for 8th overall. There is a great atmosphere in their pit and Gavin is happy to be back racing in Canada.
#29 Brock Hoyer will be looking to improve on his 9-18 12th when we head to Kamloops. The likeable BC rider will head east if the results are there.
Tyler Medaglia had some bad luck. He stalled his bike on the first lap of moto 1 and had to work his way through the pack all the way back to 7th. He also had a bad start in moto 2 but was able to pull off a 5th place finish. He is just getting warmed up!
Facciotti and Goerke kept things exciting at the front. Colton even got past Matt when the Kawasaki rider pulled in for goggles with two laps to go in the first moto.
There wasn't anything that was going to keep Goerke from taking this win. He looked fit and comfortable riding out front.
After a first turn crash in moto 1, Leading Edge Kawasaki rider, Teddy Maier, put his head down and salvaged a 7th place finish.
Teddy was able to win the 2nd moto and his 7-1 scores were good enough to edge out Kyle Beaton's 2-6.
GA Checkpoint Yamaha rider, Spencer Knowles, was forced to walk away from the first moto, but had a great 2nd, finishing in the number two place.
Topher Ingalls decided to show up for the nationals again this year and, after a very strong 5th in moto 1, he had some troubles with Jeremy Medaglia in the second, finishing 17 for 11th on the day.
