Photo Report | CSRA Snowcross/Snow Bike Championships| Presented by Leatt

We’d been planning on getting out to a few rounds of CSRA Snowcross/Snow Bike competition all winter. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and a couple rounds that were closest to our home base in London, Ontario, had to be canceled and made up later on in the schedule.

When it turned out we could make it to the final round at Horseshoe Valley Resort north of Barrie, ON, we jumped at the opportunity.

Most rounds take place in the infield of horse racing facilities or fairgrounds, but this one was on the side of a ski hill, making it difficult for me and my current knee condition to get to very many different spots to shoot photos. Add to that the crazy amount of contrast between the brightness of the snow and the rest of the scene, and I had quite a bit to learn behind the lens.

I did what I could, and here’s a closer look at the action from Championship Sunday.

It was a beautiful 14-degree C day at Horseshoe Resort. Warm enough to sit in chairs, bask in the sun, and take in some intense racing action.

The faster, more experienced classes went up to the top of the hill (yes, that’s the top, for you readers in the west) and back down.

Young Kye Doran is one of the many riders in the younger classes. The sport looks to have a solid future.

#420 William Mac Cormack pushes his little sled through the warming slush.

Hey, Kyle Carruthers, remember this trailer?

We hadn’t seen Sonya and ‘Stu’ Robinson since Italy. Congrats on the title(s) guys.

It’s looking more and more like we may see this moustache at the Rockstar MX Nationals this season.

Rick ‘Enticer’ couldn’t get enough of Nathan Bles’s new hipster look.

Heading out after a long day of hard work.

One of the most anticipated races of the day was the 5-lap vintage race.

Larry Enticer was in attendance and had a lot to do with how many people showed up to watch.

He’s a merchandising giant now!

That’s a good question, considering how Larry’s race would go.

The then-space-age Phazer.

Larry putting his new custom “69” graphics on his sled.

“Hey, can I borrow that duct tape?”

I love the “Grow a pear” sticker.

Larry’s view.

Another Phazer.

Whaaaa?! They made a 2.0 version?!

Jim Roberts ready to watch some carnage.

Sweet ride.

Larry talks some strategy.

Hey look, it’s Bigwave Sr. and Mom!

Pre-vintage grooming was a great idea.

Line ’em up!

#67 gets the early jump.

Larry hates to give it anything less that 110, but on this day overheating would force him to ease up on his usual throttle-stretching technique.

Phazers set on WIN. Wow, that was lame.

Make no mistake, Larry still tried to send it, he just didn’t use correct postage…

This could be my favourite shot of the day.

Or maybe this one. Fun Fact: “Ski-Doo” was my first word as a baby. True story.

Hanging on to it like he’s not basically at a stand still.

Poor Larry never had a chance. His sled over-heated and I think he burned the wieners and beans.

He was a gracious loser…

…and went back to printing money at his merch stand.

#382 Gillian Bradshaw took the Trail Sport 600 Women win.

#369 Kelsey Frank was 2nd.

Maybe a little too young for a witty “420” caption…

Waiting for their next race in the warm sunshine.

Nathan Bles raced Sport 600 and Snow Bikes on the weekend.

Isaac St. Onge lined up in staging for Sport 600.

I was standing almost at that orange marker the previous lap. When they hit this huge double for the first time, I pretty much soiled myself.

#115 Dave Joanis took 4th in the Pro Open Sunday and 3rd for the season.

I promised Mark Stallybrass I wouldn’t make fun of him like my “tourist” comment from the MXON in Italy. How’s that, Mark?

St. Onge took a couple wins in the Sport classes and both titles.

Ryan Hunt was 5th in Pro X.

#173 Corey Watkinson took runner-up spot in Pro Open Sunday and 4th for the series.

Joanis is a fun rider to watch.

#188 Scott Vande Borne keeping his eyes ahead in the Pro Lite Stock class.

#204 Justin Roney was 9th in the class.

Nathan Bles airing it out in the rhythm section before the finish line.

Ripping these things downhill over jumps must be quite the rush!

Roney in the same section.

Ben Holmes through some serious roost en route to 7th in Pro Open.

#282 Devin Wilson would eventually get by #21 Blake Taylor to take 9th.

Holmes heads back up the hill in hot pursuit.

#459 Jake Weir took 5th in Pro Lite Stock.

#14 RJ Roy won Pro Lite Stock Sunday and took home the title with 7 first place finishes.

Devin Wilson making some mid-air adjustments.

#433 Cale Callan took 7th in Pro Lite Stock.

There was some good close racing in this class.

Roney had some troubles but kept charging.

It was #421 Dylan Hall who took the win in the Pro Open class Sunday and was 9 points back in 2nd for the series.

#999 Colby Crapo did what he had to do by taking 3rd and winning the Pro Open title.

Crapo won 6 of 15 overalls.

We went to check out the Snow Bike racing, in particular.

There are lots of different kits on the market these days. The narrow track must handle well, but the deep, soft slush may have meant for some added spinning.

Nathan Bles going back to his roots with the #218.

Lots of options.

Riders blast off for a snow bike moto.

The last thing the others needed was a holeshot from Bles.

Nathan leads the way through the rhythm section.

It was extremely tricky conditions for the bikes.

#29 Stuart Hunt finished up in 3rd spot for the day and 2nd in points.

#88 Rob Vanyi took 11th in the soft stuff.

Brendan Bishop was 9th.

Shawn Marinof was 5th.

Logan Hosley was 10th.

There were riders without numbers, but that could be ex-pro motocrosser, Mike Island, who finished 2nd Sunday.

In the end, Nathan Bles took the win and the inaugural CSRA Snow Bike title.
