$2 Tuesday: 2010 Ste. Julie MX National Photo Report

Here’s a look back to when Ste. Julie was still on the schedule.

From July 26, 2010:

Ste Julie, Quebec, was the setting for the 6th Round of the Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals this past weekend. The small town is a suburb of Montreal and sits about 20 kilometers to the east. Getting through Montreal unscathed is almost always a chore and, as the old joke goes, “It’ll be quite a nice city, when they get finished.”

‘Carmen’ made it through, yet again.

Amateur racing was held on Saturday and I have to mention how well it was run and how absolutely packed it was. The first race of the day was Supermini at around 8am and the stands were all full. Very impressive.

Sunday started out sunny and warm. The big news going into the weekend was the arrival of Mike Brown who was going to be racing the new KTM 350F. There was a pretty good debate about where he would finish in the standings.
Here he is checking out the track with mechanic, Stephan.

KTM’s MX2 boys, #1 Eric Nye and #12 Kyle McGlynn were drafting their way into Paris on Sunday…minus the Champagne. 😉

New York’s Jeff Mort was kind enough to let me crash in his new (to him) Toy Hauler. Thanks, Jeff.

He wasn’t overly thrilled with his finishes (29th OA) but at least he put his bike in the show!

During practice, the officials did their best to force riders to create more than one line.

#41 Dylan Kaelin took a fall in the back section and tweaked his right knee.

He disappeared for a few hours. He said he went to the hospital, waited for hours, decided to leave, called his doctor in Toronto, then headed back to the track to watch the races. I hope the prognosis isn’t as bad as you suspect, Dylan.

It was cool to see this ‘outside the industry’ sponsor on Kory Snelgrove’s bike.

He ended up getting 17th overall.

It was a breakout race for #26 Blackfoot Direct Yamaha rider Jared Allison. He grabbed the second moto holeshot and took his first-ever 3rd overall in MX2.

Talk about a busy pit! There were three Allisons in the MX2 races. I joked that if someone in the race falls, chances are good it will be an Allison. That has to be stressful. Thanks for the food and hospitality all weekend, folks.

I didn’t talk to #15 South Africa’s Kerim Fitz-Gerald all that much on the weekend. Hell, nobody did and I’ll explain why in a minute…
He went 12-8 for 8th OA.

Those of you on Facebook will be happy that Kerim’s ‘better half’ Chloe is here and the gooey messages should cease for the time being. 😉

I’ll tell you who looked good in MX2…#10 Tim Tremblay, that’s who. He quietly went about his business and snagged a 5th overall with a 9th and a 4th.

KTM Canada’s Eric Nye didn’t have a whole lot to say about his 5-5 finishes but it got the job done for a 4th. Here he is leading #1 Teddy Maier.

Orange Motorsports KTM rider Richard Grey was looking to back up his strong races in Gopher Dunes. He got a good start in the first moto and held on for 8th. He scored zero points in the second and got 15th.

He hit Eric Nye in the air on the first lap of moto 2 and came from way, way back. I think he even surprised himself at how far he managed to claw back into the mix.

Here’s a shot of some ‘bigwigs’ over at Blackfoot. #5 RedBull Yamaha Blackfoot Fox rider Tyler Medaglia had the speed to get the win Sunday but his 3-DNF (due to a mechanical troubles) pushed him back to 12th on the day.

#1 Leading Edge Kawasaki’s Teddy Maier battled with overall winner Kaven Benoit all day. In the end, Teddy’s 1-2 forced him to settle for second on the day, much to the delight of the partisan, French crowd.

I always enjoy a ‘pit lane’ photo.

Speaking of that, Kelsey seems to have a way of making it into all of my photo reports.

Orange Motorsports KTM rider Jeremy Medaglia scored 6-7 motos (swapping finishes with Leading Edge Kawasaki’s Spencer Knowles) giving him 7th. He had the speed to be up at the front and had a few issues with lapped traffic again this week. One thing I’ll say on this is that a full gate is cool to look at but, when it’s made up of so many yellow backgrounds, lappers are bound to be an issue.

Duroy KTM rider #27 Kaven Benoit took the first overall of his young career Sunday. The crowd went nuts for the likable local. It was a hard-fought battle as Teddy Maier was ON HIM at the end of the second moto. Congratulations, Kaven.

OK, how’s this, Josh?

There was a lot of buzz around the Women’s class Sunday as it was the first round of the Eastcoast series. Everyone wanted to know who would be at the top of the podium with the much-anticipated return of Florida rider Jacqueline Ross. Add to the mix another hotshot American rider #31 Taylor Millar from Alabama and it stood to be a great day of racing.
This was on the sighting lap. Just proves the importance of walking the track in the morning, I guess.

Here’s Taylor Miller. She has great style and kept both the leaders honest the entire day.

Here’s a face to the name.

OTSFF Suzuki rider, and defending champ, Heidi Cooke was excited to get the action going. She was happy with her result and feels she has a better idea of what it will take to challenge Ross in the coming weeks.
Heidi just loves it when I stick the camera in her face. She finished 2-2.

The day belonged to #734 Motopark Racing’s Jacqueline Ross. Heidi Cooke holeshot both motos but Ross was able to get around her in both. She didn’t win by much at all but it was enough to go 1-1. Rivergalde should be interesting.
I actually thought that, because of all the up and downhills, there would be a lot of opportunity for passing but the riders said otherwise.

I’ll tell you what…we may all be ‘moto heads’ here but having a freestyle show during intermission/track maintenance time is always a big hit with the fans. Ben Milot brought his group of FMXers to Ste Julie Sunday.

A couple of question marks in the MX1 class, Kornel Nemeth and Mike Brown, discuss things before a moto.

The big story of the day was the second, rare crash of #1 Red Bull Yamaha Blackfoot Fox rider Colton Facciotti. #28 KTM Canada rider Ryan Millar grabbed the official holeshot but ut was Colton who took the lead after turn one.
This looked to be another runaway victory for him at this point.

But, while coming down the steep hill after the triple Colt’s back end got bucked up and he rode the front wheel as long as he could until things finally got ugly for him. He got thrown around pretty violently and had a talk with the official about whether or not he should head back into the race. I have some pics but will not post them. Colt left the track early to get checked out. He mentioned a sore shoulder. At this point, I don’t know what the prognosis is.

Another interesting story was the return of #23 Jack Carpenter. He was pitting out of the Cernics Kawasaki pit Sunday. He finished with 17-10 moto scores for 14th.

I don’t know who he had there as a mechanic but team owner Billy Whitley sprayed me with the washer when I took this pic of him doing the ‘dirty work.’

It was good to see #54 Davey Fraser back at a National on Sunday. He finished 19th with 19-16 motos.

Part-time National rider #46 Simon Homans showed up in Ste Julie and looked very fast. He was in a great battle for 5th with several other riders all second moto long. He scored 14-5 for 8th. Hope we see him line up in Moncton this weekend.

#65 Cernics Kawasaki rider Troy Adams had a solid day. He crashed with Machine Racing’s #9 Kyle Keast in the second corner of the first moto and blasted his way through the field to 9th. He battled Nemeth in the second moto for 2nd spot and then Demuth late in the moto. He finished 9-4 for 5th.

#22 Redemption Racing Kawasaki rider Mason Phillips (left) had a solid day and battled near the front. His 4-6 finishes gave him 4th on the day and should give him confidence heading into the latter part of the season.

Here’s a shot of 3rd place finisher KTM Canada’s Kornel Nemeth in his battle with Adams. In the background you can see #311 Mike Brown in his battle for 5th place in the second moto. I spoke to him after the races and you can watch what he had to say in the link on the site. Brown finished 12-9 for 10th overall on his KTM 350.

I got a kick out of how far he had to duck to get through the tunnel on the way to the start line.

#135 Cernics Kawasaki’s Josh Demuth gave everything he had in the first moto and barely had enough energy to climb on stage.

He ended the day with 3-3 finishes for 2nd overall after making up a ton of ground.

Yes, this is as bad as it looks. I think they changed out an engine before #3 OTSFF Suzuki rider Bobby Kiniry could get going. He went out a lap down in the second moto and charged as hard as he could. He looked to be the second fastest rider on the day but it didn’t matter after this problem. His 2nd place first moto kept him up to 9th at the end of the day.

The day belonged to this guy though. #2 Red Bull Yamaha Blackfoot Fox rider Dusty Klatt killed everyone. There is no other way to say it.

He looked like he was having so much fun out there, whipping it all over and never seeming to miss a berm all day long.

He mentioned it was too early to celebrate the championship just yet but he has a 22-point lead in the series now with 3 rounds left and after winning by FIFTY SECONDS Sunday I can’t see anyone catching this guy.

He threw in a patented ‘one-footer’ at the checkers (that I missed).

He was all smiles on the podium and when he was asked to toss out two Montreal SX tickets he tucked them into a pair of goggles. Nice.

Before I go I should mention the other big news of the day: The Julies were there (it was Ste. Julie, after all!). They walked around and even posed for random photos with fans. I thought it was nice although, believe it or not, this is the best photo I got of them. Ugh…

That’s it for this week, folks. Riverglade is this coming weekend Sunday August 1.
I’ll leave you with this pic of Pam Blam and #8 Gopher Dunes Suzuki rider Liam O’Farrell being nice to me. I could have posted the one where Pam is holding up an entirely different finger.

See you at the races…
