Let’s have a look at the people under the helmets and around the track for 2026 Canadian Triple Crown Series round #1 at Wild Rose MX in Calgary, Alberta. It’s time for ‘Faces at the Races‘ where we have fun with the comments but insert enough information that you may even learn something. It’s all in good fun, so let’s get to it.
One more year of this backdrop. Are you ready, Andy Kerr? Round 1, let’s go! I think he want over and peed on the tunnel jump that took out Wyatt Kerr a couple years ago, but he may have embellished that story…When the Ladies class hit the track, this woman did a little tree branch dance.Tough way to leave the track. This was Crayden Dillon’s bike in the pits on Saturday.3D printed washing goodies on the GDR bikes. That’s pretty funny on Isla Philips swingarm.Paul Kingsley is back in action as Head Referee and got the day started by going over the rules. I always start the day by lurking around the riders meeting and shooting photos to keep things nice and awkward. That’s Daniel Elmore from Telkwa, BC. He likes it awkward. I don’t always know who people are without their numbers and helmets, so that keeps it nice and awkward at my end too. That’s #25 Cole Pranger. He’s better than the 15th result at round 1, so watch for him to heat up as we head east. There are lots of new peeps to get to know under the Dusty Rocks MX awning, so I’ll do my best to meet everyone. I’ll have something wittier to say about this crew under these photos as the summer moves on. It was great to see Jared and Dominique Petruska on Sunday with their 2 little kids. Jared lined up in the 250 class and…wait, he’s not in the results. I’m waiting to hear back about what happened. Unfortunately, Liam Dodds has a broken bone in his foot and won’t be able to line up for a while. You couldn’t swing a cat without hitting a Brodeur on Sunday, and Eve wasn’t even racing! Speaking of awkward, Kourtney Lloyd and I made things weird at Friday’s press conference with Amelie Croteau. Sorry, Brett Lee.After what happened a couple years ago for Wyatt Kerr here, he’s happy to see it in his rear view mirror. More on that when we get to the photo of his dad, Andy Kerr…Local boy #150 Dexter Seitz is one of the fast Intermediate riders we have competing from the west. 15-20 put him 17th.This was our first look at #38 Isla Phillips from Utah. She said she’s still too young to race the AMA WMX and fought for wins in Calgary, finishing 3rd.The MX101 FXR Yamaha team is chock full of championship contenders. If you’ve been around the sport a while, seeing Joe Borda would have made you give a very solid double take. I know I did when I saw him through the window at the Hotel Blackfoot of Friday! Welcome back, Shovel Duck! He’s the guy behind the prosthetic leg everyone used to drink out of at the end of Walton. We got out first look at young Vincent Wey. Don’t kid yourself, he’ll be on the box in no time. I got a new GoPro Sunday morning and interviewed him and his dad, Nick Wey, on my Walk and Talk. The camera slid into some weird mode and it didn’t work. We redid Vincent’s chat but not Nick’s. We’ll get him this week.#12 Sebastien Racine crashed out of the gate in his first 450 moto and came back to 4th. He went 4-4.The Kooch is back on his 250 2-stroke! That’s Cale Kuchnicki from Michigan. He’s a great fit for our series. Say hello when you see him at a race near you. I think he does all this on his own.Believe it or not, pre-race nerves are something you’ll miss when you stop competing. It was great to see #18 Parker Eales in Calgary. He had Kyle Springman helping him out and told Kyle not to worry about bringing much to the mechanics area. If something serious were to break, his day was simply done. I know #58 Blake Davies’ eyes are closed here, but look at that backlit duck tail! That’s a wedding photographer’s dream shot! Blake is a rookie in the 450 class and finished 16th overall (DNF-9) but that doesn’t tell the story. Mechanical in moto 1 and a couple crashes in moto 2 up to 9th, so that shows he’s ready to compete.I hate this saying, so I’m definitely going to use it: Don’t sleep on #151 Harri Kullas. Everything just looked right with him on the track. It was almost like watching Davi Millsaps back in 2016 out there! With a start, he’ll win some of these things. 3-2 for 2nd.#208 Logan Leitzel had one heck of a story to tell for Round 1. His motor was stuck in Calgary, his suspension in New Jersey. He was on the Beta Keylan Meston rode before from Jack Carter and suspension tweaked by Charlie Johnson. He won our Ryno Power Privateer Performance award for the 450 class with 8-10 9th overall. He wants to keep racing our series but it seems up in the air at the moment. “Ya, ya, boo hoo, Logan…” #1 Jamie Astudillo was a little off her game on Sunday, but don’t get used to it. She finished tied for 3rd in points with 2-4 motos. Why is this man smiling? Well, 1-1 to start the season will do that. #9 Dylan Wright has an 8-point lead over Kullas and 28 on Jess Pettis.Steve Simms is a team owner this year. The weight and cost of that hasn’t sunk in yet, apparently. LolThat’s Nathan Snelgrove seeing how long he can hold his breath. Too soon? He’s scored 30th in the 250 class.Did you see #62 Danny Robertson’s start in 450 moto 2? He used some inside local’s knowledge. 17th (14-16).I don’t think we’ll see any more of #482 Teren Gerber this season, but he was in some good battles. 13-11 put him 12th.Someone tell him he made it in here, please. It’s always great to see Boston Calder. Has it been long enough for me to use one of my favourite silly lines again? Screw it: “Have you tried the Boston Calder? The fish is delicious here!” I call this one, “KT in Profile over the Cityscape.” He wasn’t in the mood for jokes as he pushed JP’s bike past me early in moto 2….#11 Victoria Dillon cracked the top 10 in WMX with 9-10 motos. Hopefully, we see Crayden Dillon on the track this week. He’ll test out his shoulder and is “listed” as a game-time decision. I’ve got a small hard drive full of photos of Cale Foster. He’s a new home owner in the Calgary area. There’s another classic shot of him coming up…I’d forgotten the story about when I first met #85 Alex Gatt. He told me, “I’ll be the one wearing my mother’s pants…” True story. 20-17 put him 19th in the 450 class.SMX merch sale! The first one to call me out when I’m late or miss my Monday Morning Coffee column is Paul Puki. I can never tell when he’s joking…Raise your hand if you’ve gone over to the dark side and ride an electric-assist MTB.#8 Amelie Croteau finished 8th (7-9).It’s going to be good having Justin Thompson at the races this season because he’s where the buck stops. One day, I’ll go back and post every photo through the years of Sylvain Brodeur making this exact same face. “So, everyone’s talking about all the young riders coming up from the USA and I’m like, ya, whatever.” You have to read that in the voice of Liam Lynch. And we have our first “Google it, Bowker!” of the season, folks! He showed up on a pennyfarthing.#1W Katrine Ferguson had a rough start to her WMX campaign. 11-6 for 9th dug her a little hole in this championship defence fight. You never have to move the camera very far to find more Fergusons. Ciel (right) is now on the media side of the sport.Kade Johnson is a big classic-style cross-country skier… Not my best. Kade will be in the battle for podiums every week. He’s here as a privateer getting experience at the Pro level. 4-4 put him 3rd. He said he missed his high school graduation last weekend to be in Calgary.Business time. It’s Dylan Rempel’s turn for the Frid’Eh Update interview this week. He’s always a good time and looked like the one to challenge Preston for this 250 title. We’ll have a better idea after this week. The Ufimzeffs are back. Zach got a great start in moto 2 and he finished 11-8 for 10th. He’s on Day 84 for his “VLOG everyday” Instagram campaign. Check it out. He cleaned his van today…. 🤣#27 Josh Boaz rides for the AVL Husqvarna team this season. he looked good with 6-5 motos for 5th.Speaking of riders on teams… #16 Tanner Scott was closing on Johnson and will turn a few heads this season. 5th in moto 1 was followed by a big crash in moto 2 as he moved toward the front. #41 Jayden Riley is one of our many young Pro riders looking to make their mark. His 9th in moto 2 was a strong finish.#25 Cole Pranger Had a rough first round. Watch for him to right the ship this week. 15th is where he ended up in Calgary. We may have seen the last of #214 Tyler Gibbs for a bit, but 8-10 (from the back) should motivate him to keep going. #51 Josh Clark’s story of getting to Calgary is another wild one. In the end, he rode his own bike from his van with his wife by his side. He plans to do the entire series and I think the Devil’s Lake Cernys may step in to help their old friend and rider. 12-13 put him 11th.Katrine Ferguson getting some repairs in the mechanics area.1-3 tied 3-1 for #2 Kaylie Kayer.Kade Johnson with the tire cover. Was it cold? Yes it was. That’s #247 Tegan Kortenbach warming his hand before a moto. 10-7 put him 8th.Sorry, Tegan. I’m pretty sure I said no riding shots…Love it, Jeff Ryan. Were there live timing and results issues? Well…They ended up taking the live results screen down.Kourtney Lloyd at her post raising money for Team Canada MXON. Find her this week in Manitoba.Young #55 Alek Guadagno tried to ride but they decided to give his should a couple more weeks to heal.Donk working on Vincent’s bike while Nick Wey looks on.It was great to see #10 Keylan Meston at the races again. 12-15 put him 13th but he had a top start and ran near the front for a spell. Do it for the vlog!!!Jacob Frederickson finished 15th in the second moto for 19th overall. His dad, Jim Frederickson, mixed it up with the kids on Saturday to get ready for his run at Loretta’s.They acted surprised that Ryder McNabb ran up in 3rd place. I wasn’t buying it. Lol Although his day didn’t go smoothly, #377 Daniel Elmore still managed to finish 6th (7-6).Check out how fast #301 Jordan Jarvis is this week in Manitoba. Oh, and ask Lindsey Bradley about someone named Corey…Nice GasGas formation.Todd Shumlick has a long history of training champions. Here he is with Tanner Ward and Colton Facciotti.Chris Bruno is one of the good guys. Here he is helping the team. Oh, and I’m typing this in his living room right now. Huge thank you to Evelyn and Chris for the A+ hospitality this week in Ghost Lake, AB.Brett Lee and Bubba are back behind the scenes at the Nationals and I’m all for it.“How bad is it? OK, I’m going back out…”Allan Brown taking in the view.Matt Deroy getting a bird’s eye view atop the Red Bull KTM trailer.Mike Parliament from MP1 Suspension keeping a close eye on his GDR Honda riders out on the track. I know, I know, no riding shots, but this one ended in what I think was a broken wrist on Saturday. I just wanted to say that I hope he’s doing well. That’s Dylan Kaelin cheering on young #58 Kayden Mueller on Saturday.A look at the new Dusty Rocks MX team pits.Any press is good press! Nathan Snelgrove is the one who put his bike deep in the water Saturday. Here’s Kyle getting it all ready for Sunday.Sponsor break.#165 Braxton Becker is looking so good in the Junior classes that he won our Dirt Care Stud Status award for winning 250 Junior. Look out, TransCan!This shoulder stretch on Dexter Seitz looked and sounded painful. Dex lined up on Sunday and finished 17th (15-20).Photo shoot in the SSR Kawasaki pits.Ace and Gary…I mean, the dynamic duo of Paul Kingsley and Daryl Murphy. The Dupuises (?) will be the new Medaglia family in the not-so-distant future with 2 fast brothers on the rise.🎵 Hey, Joe, where you going with that phone in your hand… 🎶Big on-air reporter. Most of you don’t know this yet, but Kade can hold this smile all day long, if needed. And I don’t think Dylan has any other facial expression! Derek Schuster told me a funny story about how he was trying give Rempel a bit of shit one day and ended up laughing himself! Hey, there’s Kyle Springman now! That’s the one we’re looking for, Cale Foster. Hey, I’m almost out of Folsterholmes maple syrup!Brandon Rodwell of R4Media getting the shot. The top 3 is going to be difficult to crack, moving forward, but Sebastien Racine looks like the one to fight for it with Ryder McNabb. We’ll see this week. And yes, I’m aware of how much this caption just motivated Tanner Ward.I think Tee Perrott will stick to local racing for the summer now. He finished 14th (16-13).Keylan was feeling the local energy on the line.I find it difficult to bet against Dylan Wright when he has this look in his eyes. 1-1 and he even said “Y’all” on stage.Chris Pomeroy getting the shot for MXP Mag.James Lissimore was there with his family. I think he even put Claudie to work!Raced Saturday, shot Sunday.Brad Nemeth is just shot. Haha. Just kidding. Brad is the creative force behind the production. There’s another Brad…Brad McNabb. It was good to see Coral again, too.We had a nice look-back shot all planned out with Marc Dionne on Saturday…then I forgot to go out on the track. Sorry, Marc. This week? That’s John Meaney who lives in Calgary. He’s originally a “Townie” from St. John’s, NFLD. Don’t know how to pronounce it properly? He taught me this: “Understand Newfoundland.” Boom. You know the drill. What, me worry?I remember the time Joe got slapped in the face in Morden, MB.Atta boy, Skippy Mobbs!Dang. Jess Pettis spotted Wright 25 points in moto 2 when he tipped over and got hit by another rider, damaging the killswitch, I believe.Sun and Snow Dirt Care distributor in the house!Winning never gets old.Just ask Derek. If I’m Dylan and Jess, I’m keeping an eye on the #151.One more before we get to John’s photos.
John Meaney sent a few photos over:
How did he capture exactly how I felt after landing from Greece on Monday and driving to Calgary on Tuesday?Tanner’s new profile pic.Quinn Amyotte ready for action. Quinn finished 6-8 for 6th and should be in a good little top 5 fight this season.A-Tron Pomeroy (Dave Bell). Ayrton finished 16th (16-16).There’s a look at Josh Boaz.Yes, Harri is a nice guy, but he’s here to win this thing.Prepping for a mud moto.I don’t fan geek out often, but when Canadians who finished 1 a 3 on the Hahnenkamm at Kitzbuel… yes, Kitzbuel, show up, I lose it. I did an elementary school speech on Franz Klammer (he won it 4 times). That’s James Crawford and Kyle Blandford with Paul from LRX.
