Let’s have a look at the riders under their helmets and the people around the track for this week’s ‘Faces at the Races‘ column from Round 5 at River Glade in Moncton, NB.
I like to start off with a shot of Paul Kingsley at the riders meeting, but this week I had to get a shot of his Bad Boy Club tattoo! 1980’s? Nope, it’s new. Love it!We missed our chance to retell a great story, but, hopefully, we’ll meet again soon so we can tell it. And how about Daryl Murphy dropping a brown note to support Team Canada MXON?! I think he goes by either Ace or Gary now.I walked away to throw a little football with some riders and Kourtney Lloyd grabbed my camera. That’s Larry Northrop who is co-owner of the River Glade track, Toys for Big Boys, a Harley Davidson dealership, and maybe more? He’s the Mitch Cooke of Moncton. Mitch is the Larry Northrop of Truro. He also used to work on the WSX crew. I’m glad Kourtney grabbed a shot of Nick Evennou because although we had a nice, long catch-up, I neglected to turn and fire. I don’t know who that is on the left but he appears to have a couple questions for Kourtney. These guys were pumped to see how fast young Kade Dupuis is and egged him on to hit the Klattapult on his 65. He tried it and did it on his Supermini. Victoria Dillon had a “clean sweep” in the Girls (9-16) class on Saturday. Uh-thank you. They smiled right after this, I promise. Little #101 Bowen Lockhart was just sitting there revving his bike way before the race was starting. Ryan had to tell him to take it easy. Haha. I like his attitude! They call him “Tur-Bo.”While the races were underway on Saturday, the track was getting prepped for Sunday.I didn’t check in for the final loose spoke count this week. Katrine Ferguson showing how happy she was to learn it wasn’t the scaphoid she broke. Brett Young perhaps doubting his decision to line up on Sunday? I don’t know if anyone enjoyed their time on the track and at the races more than Kobi Cox did. Oh wait, maybe #208 Logan Leitzel did. Have you watched the 450 highlights video? 🤣Sylvain Brodeur going easy on me this week. Guess who I’ll hear from if I screw something up in this column?I’m still recovering from Sam Gaynor telling me he wasn’t racing until maybe Walton. Jordan Jarvis enlisted the help of someone I ask if she’s riding today every time I see her. That’s Liz Burke on the right. No, she didn’t race…The name “Drew Roberts” still confuses some people from Ontario. That’s BC Drew who lives in Texas now. Every spring when the Canadian Nationals are about to start I think of this quote from Good Will Hunting: “But you know what the best part of my day is? It’s for about ten seconds from when I pull up to the curb to when I get to your door. Because I think maybe I’ll get up there and I’ll knock on the door and you won’t be there. No goodbye, no see you later, no nothin’. Just left. I don’t know much, but I know that.” That’s me thinking maybe Dylan is riding the AMA Pro Motocross Championship or the MXGP. Haha. This caption could go either way: Quinn Amyotte is either in the “Schmidts Gay” skit from SNL (Google it, Bowker!) or he’s secretly recording all of us with his glasses. Dylan Rempel was about to have a great day in what should be a long line of great days. I call this one, “The Last Breakfast.” Is that joke OK to say??? Too far? Sylvain will let me know…Uh oh, Brett Lee thinks that was too far. If you’re asking yourself who “Rollerball” is, you will close this column and head to Youtube immediately. What are you doing? Go!I was finished racing in 1988, but I didn’t wrap a trailer to let everyone know! 😉Guess who that is? Yep, Kobi Cox. Paul going old school to force some new lines during first qualifiers. Papa Astudillo is going to like what he sees when he finds the live timing.
OK, just a couple riding shots:
Kaven Benoit with an entirely new list of stresses as KTM Team Manager. Moving the RydeTV camera into place. I hope these kids turn Pro one day so we can post these as some #throwbackthursday photos.Wash your hands, kids. Noah Porter was pretty sick on the weekend.Paul taking some suggestions from a guy who has been there, done that around the world. Or maybe he’s using the Force to pull a can of Red Bull to him?I chilled with Drew Bezanson and had a hot dog, hamburger, and a couple cream sodas in the Toys VIP BBQ tower. Thanks, Earl! Witty tee shirt slogans always make it in. My buddy, Michael Jackson, was the king of these things in the 1990’s at Grubwear. He’s the one who came up with “Canada Kicks Ass” and “Hey F@&k Face” for The North Face.Kyle Murdoch raced Southwick Saturday and then River Glade on Sunday. Perfect, it’s his week for the Frid’Eh Update interview. Unfortunately, they had to find Donk some “busy work” after the first moto. I went ahead and booked a Motel for Ottawa, Jim Scott.Didn’t see THAT coming, did you, D-Spec?!I assume it was Papa Murdoch who did the driving all night from Southwick? This is what “The Other Drew Roberts” looks like. Lol Orange and pink. Bold 90’s move from the guys over at DRT. Jeremy McKie should have gone with frosted tips in celebration. He passed just 1 fewer riders than Mars Millar did on Sunday – 17 vs. 18.There’s a tee shirt that reads: “Who cares about how my race went, ask me about my holeshot!” J/K #32 Liam Dodds did more than just grab the starts. What a day for the BC rider. Hey, there’s Mars Millar now. He passed the most riders on Sunday.Chris Dasilva was holding it down for the Dasilva family. Chris was 20-20 for 21st.Sam Gaynor was going for the Chuck Liddel look. Did you know that Joe Strummer was copying Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver with his punk rock Mohawk? On Saturday, +30 and +50 had 2 gate drops in the same moto. Guess which age group 50-year-old Jim Frederickson battled for the win in? You may as well start learning to pronounce “Dupuis” properly now because 2 of them are coming! That was Ben Mistelbacher out there on the blacked-out #617. Ben finished 24th.Brett Young’s better half. Shouldn’t that umbrella be shading Brett? Lol Bret was 27th.#212 Niko Holmes. He finished 26th.Every time #659 Alex White from Maine rode by, I found myself singing, “Don’t call me white” by NOFX. He finished 28th.Need more proof that Kobi Cox had fin on Sunday? That’s #234 Bryton Gammon from Nova Scotia. He finished 33rd.I see you over there. #611 isn’t the return of Brady Sheren. That’s Jake Drysdale from New Brunswick. 39th for him. Opening ceremonies and anthem.Custom paint is still the coolest way to go. Nathan finished up in 6th place with 9-5 motos. The bleach budget must be close to the engine drying equipment over there at AVL! Too soon? #126 Ayrton Pomeroy finished 17th.Nathan Fraser won the limbo contest on Saturday night and then took 34th.Chris Pomeroy peacocking to the first turn before a gate drop. First moto win for #73 Crayden Dillon. Pretty cool moment. Tension was a little high in the 250 class for Kevin Tyler this week. Cruz Gordon ended up with a broken wrist after that big hit when he came up short on the “Leap of Faith.”Daniel Elmore was sick and sore this week and still put himself in the mix. He still finished a close 7th.That’s what #172 Seth Kready from Pennsylvania looks like. He finished 11th (12-11).I don’t know who this is but there’s a guy drinking coffee sitting next to me that looks just like him. Hayden Halstead borrowed this YZ450 from Homestead Orchards and finished 18th.Harri Kullas took the overall but didn’t gain or lose any points on Dylan Wright. OK, I’ll mention it. During first qualifying, I was standing next to MX101 engine builder Alan Brown. I said to him, “Hmm, I’m seeing a lot of smoke coming out of the #31.” “Really?” he asked. “No, not at all. I’m totally joking.” Well, on that same lap Ryder’s motor let go on the Klattapult and he crashed hard. There’s talk that I may, in fact, be a witch…Cooks Brook, NS rider Hannah Cole won the Brian House trophy as top Pro rider. Kourtney Lloyd went through a couple boxes of Kleenex this weekend at the Team Canada MXON booth. She was also feeling pretty ill. Let’s let her say it: “See you *SNIFF* at the *SNIFF* races…“
Thanks for looking! See you at Sand Del Lee this week.
