Detroit SX | Practice Photos and Notes

By Billy Rainford

We’re are at the second closest round of Monster Energy AMA Supercross this weekend in Detroit, Michigan. The first thing we noticed was how much we forgot we liked this stadium: Ford Field. Everything is nice and close and getting around in here is a breeze.

The next thing we noticed was the 100 yard long set of whoops. These things are going to be game changers tonight. The first few are widely spaced, followed by a small break and then another section of tighter whoops. It looks very tricky for an awful lot of these Pro riders.

Here are a few photos and some notes from this afternoon’s practice and qualifying.

#6 Jeremy Martin comes in with the red plates and ended up 5th in qualifying.

#53 Tyler Bowers sat at the top for a while in qualifying but eventually ended up in 4th.

#49 Martin Davalos lost the red plats when he wasn’t able to enter Canada (and more importantly, return) and took 3rd in timed qualifying.

#66 Arnaud Tonus started going triple-triple through the first group of whoops and was on to until late. He was 2nd.

#50 Malcolm Stewart was again fast in qualifying. Look for his to want a solid night to make up for last weekend in Toronto.

#1 Ryan Dungey seemed very methodical in practice today and was 5th fastest.

#41 Trey Canard ended up 4th fastest.

#3 Eli Tomac looked aggressive all day and finished up in 3rd.

#21 Jason Anderson will want to get a good start tonight and finished 2nd fastest.

#25 Marvin Musquin’s inevitable rise to the top of the 450 class continued here in Detroit as he topped the qualifying times.

#27 Nick Wey is back at his home race here in Michigan. He'll have home field advantage.

#22 Chad Reed should be happy with how difficult the whoops are here tonight.

There were a LOT of crashes here during the day program!

Notes:

-PR-MX.ca supported rider Hunter Mimms crashed in practice and hurt his arm. Turns out it hadn’t healed properly from an early injury. He’s a game-time decision.

-#41 Trey Canard took the time to high 5 every rider in the KTM Jr. Supercross line on his way down to the track.

-#519 Josh Cartwright went down hard in the first turn when they all blasted off in timed qualifying. His shoulder looked like an issue but he was able to walk off the track.

-#297 Henry Miller left the track favouring his right wrist.

-We watched #653 Tyler Bereman‘s bent bike get pushed off the track in qualifying but we didn’t see what happened to him.

-#36 Justin Hill crashed in qualifying and sort of stepped over the bars. His rear fender was pointed skyward and he took some time to walk off the track.

-#10 Justin Brayton had a ghost push a Tuff block out in front of him and he went down.

-#14 Cole Seely got off lucky after endoing badly in the tricky section before the final straight.

We’re now on a break until the night show starts here at Ford Field at 6:30.
