Monday Morning Coffee

Lots of racing took place around the world over the weekend. If you’re a Pro rider with some indoor skills and experience, there are a ton of options throughout the winter, if you make some calls or drop some hints to the right people. But we’ll get to all that…

When I was a kid, my buddy had a brother who was 4 years older than us. He was one of the “cool kids” at school and influenced our musical tastes during these formative years. These “tastes” definitely slanted more on the ‘punk rock’ side of music. There was a Canadian band who had gained a fair amount of notoriety for their tongue-in-cheek look at a whole slew of serious cultural issues. The band was the Forgotten Rebels and they came from Hamilton, Ontario.

The band was formed in 1977 when punk was clawing its way onto the scene and these guys were at the forefront here in Canada. And yes, this means the band will be 40 years old in 2017! OK, so where am I going with this, you ask? When a band plays a huge part in your development as a human, you kind of keep tabs on them. I’ve seen these guys at least 100 times live in concert. No, they don’t play stadiums or even arenas – these shows are always at bars or clubs.

Basically, we go see them whenever we can…every time. Every show we catch, we worry it could be the last time we get the chance to see them, so we rarely miss the opportunity. Well, here we were again this past weekend worried it could be our last chance, so off we went to the famous bar in London, Call the Office.

It used to be that we’d go to these shows and see a whole bunch of people we went to high school with, but those people have dropped off along the way and we seem to be some of the last ones standing. We used to get them to play concerts at our school when I had some pull as to who the talent would be… and I went to high school in the ’80’s so it’s been a while! Some of their songs are a little ‘rough around the edges’ so they were strictly forbidden to play a bunch of them during our shows.

However, someone actually got them to head over to a friend’s place after the show and they proceeded to play all the songs they weren’t allowed to play with a tiny toy ukulele and some beat up drum sticks. How cool is that?!

Anyway, the lead singer goes by the name, Mickey DeSadist (you read that right) and he puts on some of the most hilarious live shows. He’s actually still reasonably fit, too, and I’m told he can be found on the excellent mountain bike trails around the Hamilton/Ancaster area quite regularly.

The guys put on another classic Rebels show and we’ll probably go again when they announce their 40th anniversary tour in the next couple months…

We keep going to the Forgotten Rebels’ shows just in case it’s the last time we get to see Mickey take a bow.

As you scroll through those results, you see a lot of Canadian-related content like Cade Clason, Cole Martinez, and Steven Mages, but you’ll also notice Canadian rider Kade Walker‘s name. When I saw he didn’t finish the races, I went looking online to see what I could find…

Good luck, Kade. You’re living an amazing experience over there in Europe, but not with a knee like that! Hopefully, you get the surgery you need and can keep making those memories over there.
