Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column by Bigwave about Motocross and other interesting topics

By Billy Rainford

It feels great to be sitting in my own back yard drinking a cup of coffee this morning. That was a long two-week period of being at the races.

Loretta Lynn’s is especially difficult because of the addition of insane humidity. A few people were complaining about it late in the week here at Walton Raceway. All I can say is you have no idea what humidity is until you sit in a valley in the hills of Tennessee in the middle of August. It’s intense, to say the least.

Also, there were only a few classes that didn’t have Canadians in them, so that meant grabbing content for almost every race that was run. It was, of course, great, but meant there weren’t many times for breaks.

Anyway, it was an amazing couple weeks of covering amateur racing, but it’s also nice to be sitting at home.

How did Walton go, you ask? Well, I can say that the future of Canadian Motocross is in good shape, speed-wise.

We had a bunch of riders who dominated their respective classes and went undefeated. In fact, young Kade Dupuis went 9 for 9 last week! I’ll post all the champions with photos a little later, but, if you’re like me and like to scroll results sheets, you can check out how everyone at the 2026 TransCan did on the AMO results page HERE.

We posted all the specialty award winner on our Instagram and Facebook pages, but here they are again:

The 3 Canadian riders who will race at Moto Club Ernée in France at the YZ Super Finale are:

65cc: Kayden Mueller
85cc: Chandler Powell
125cc: Talon Medaglia

Levi McGibney wins the Wiseco Piston Most Improved Rider award at the 2026 TransCan at Walton Raceway

Kade Dupuis wins the Atlas Brace award at the 2026 TransCan at Walton Raceway as the top scoring rider in the 65, 85, and Supermini classes.

Kade went 9-for-9 this week.

KTM Canada wins the Manufacturer’s Cup at the 2026 TransCan at Walton Raceway.

(That’s Kaven Benoit accepting the trophy from Kyle Keast.)

The Yamaha Motor Canada Ltd. Factory Rider Award at the 2026 TransCan at Walton Raceway goes to #347 Didier Godbout. This was the first time this award has gone to a Vet racer.

The Rick Joseph Award at the 2026 TransCan at Walton Raceway goes to Tyler Kirby. Unfortunately, they left right after the final 250 Intermediate moto and we’re told that they will go to the hospital to get his shoulder checked out.

The winner of this award gets their photo on the cover of the following year’s TransCan program. The Rick Joseph Award recognizes the character, achievements and potential of riders in the Intermediate class.

The 2026 Fox Racing Bronze Boot at the TransCan at Walton Raceway goes to Jonathan Bergeron.

On Sunday, we had all 3 chapionships still in play.

301 Jordan Jarvis
1 Jamie Astudillo -6

Jamie Astudillo took the moto 1 win ahead of Jordan Jarvis and so it would all be decided in moto 2. Unfortunately, Jordan was left sitting at the line when the gate drop when she suffered one of the most untimely mechanicals in the sport’s history!

Jamie went on to win the race and the title.

250
24 Dylan Rempel
31 Ryder Malinoski -3

This one was a nail-biter heading in and then when Dylan went out and won the first moto it left you wondering how far Ryder would go for this title. He had his chance off the start and pushed Dylan wide but nobody hit the ground.

In the end, the split wins and the title went to Rempel.

450
9 Dylan Wright
151 Harri Kullas -12

The 450 class wasn’t as tight, as Wylan had 12 points on Harri heading into this one. That meant Dylan could have mailed this one in, but that’s not the way he’s wired.

Preston Kilroy took both wins and there’s no way you could argue that Dylan wasn’t trying to get around him for the win because he was pushing! And who doesn’t want that sword?!

Preston was docked one position for going off the track so that meant his 1-1 turned into a 2-1 to go along with Dylan’s 1-2. Harri was 3rd and 2nd in the championship.

GDR Honda took both titles.

And here’s something else: Harri Kullas headed home to Estonia right away so he can be ready for the MX Masters on their national holiday this coming Thursday. Also, I was talking with him before one of the 250 motos and he will compete in his first Half Ironman Triathlon ( Ironman Tallinn )in Estonia on Saturday, August 22nd!

I’m going to try to follow along with how he does in both.

Next up for a few of our racers are the final 2 rounds of AMA Pro Motocross and AMA WMX at Budds Creek this weekend and Ironman MX next weekend for the final round. I’ll try to get to Ironman to cover the action.

OK, I didn’t know what to start talking about this Monday because most things would take me a couple hours each, so let’s move on. I hope this MMC was enough to get you through another cup, at least.

Check back later for all the videos and more photos and stories from a long 2 weeks of moto!

We’ll just let Dylan Rempel doing a burnout in a pink balaclava say it this week: “See you at the races…
