Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column

Monday Morning Coffee on a Thursday where we talk about some of what happened at Round 7 at Motocross Deschambault.

By Billy Rainford

This past Monday was drive home from MX Deschambault day. Because of that, I wasn’t able to get Monday Morning Coffee up. Mondays after Canadian Triple Crown Series MX Nationals are when I try to get the videos from that round up as soon as I can, and that means MMC takes the hit. However, I think people have been enjoying the bullet point recaps describing much of what happened on Sunday, so I wanted to put one of these up for Round 7 at Motocross Deschambault.

Here are some things that happened:

  1. ECAN set a record for entries this year. The number was somewhere close to 850.
  2. The big double claimed a few riders and Intermediate rider #126 Ayrton Pomeroy was one of them during the ECAN.
  3. My eyeball count had attendance at Deschambault higher than all the previous rounds combined. I’d like to hear the numbers.
  4. KTM Canada had Eve Brodeur, Kaven Benoit, and Marvin Musquin with Dylan Rempel.
  5. Joey Crown checked a 250 2-stroke through tech but had it blow up in Q2 so he had to ride his dad’s stock KTM 150 2-stroke. He crashed in moto 1 and didn’t have a good day.
  6. #80 Preston Kilroy and #1 Jess Pettis were fastest qualifiers in 250 and 450.
  7. Kilroy had the potential to clinch the 250 title. He went into Round 7 up 47 points on Rempel.
  8. #54 Dylan Walsh had his motor going away in moto 1 but he kept pushing and it made it across the line, but he fell back to 12th.
  9. #29 Phil NIcoletti had his bike smoking in both motos but it held on. Pettis said afterward that he was hoping he’d get a gift but it didn’t happen.
  10. #28 Sam Gaynor jammed his back in qualifying. Before moto 1, his dad told him he couldn’t race if he couldn’t get himself on the bike. You should have seen how hard he struggled to get on it! Unfortunately, the pain was too much for him to ride through.
  11. #10 Hannah Cole crashed on the downhill after the Tim Tremblay ski jump in qualifying. #1W Brodeur had nowhere to go and crashed over her bike. They had last and second last gate pick and were on the very inside and very outside to start moto 1. Cole was 5th, Brodeur was 3rd.
  12. #1E Jamie Astudillo has not lost a single moto this summer.
  13. Musquin went 1-1 in the Premix class but #50 Crayden Dillon gave 100% trying to go with the former World Champion.
  14. Benoit grabbed both 250 holeshots and you could literally tell where he was on the track by the crowd noise. It was like watching Travis Pastrana race outdoors back in the day!
  15. Rempel went from about last to 5th in 250 moto 2.
  16. Walsh was also near the back in moto 2 and made it all the way up to 8th.
  17. #46 Nathan Germain is from up the road in Stoneham, QC. He used his local knowledge to take 6th (5-6) in the 250 class. His best result of the season.
  18. Pettis shot off to the right down the start straight in 450 moto 1 and from the back looked like it could have been much worse. That’s where he crashed badly a few years ago.
  19. #27 Tanner Scott got the chance to ride #9 Dylan Wright‘s 450. Unfortunately, they suffered similar issues Dylan had at Gopher Dunes and Tanner ended up 11-22 for 17th. He was 10th off the start in moto 2 but only completed 1 lap.
  20. #84 Tanner Ward struggled to get by #107 Lars Van Berkel in 450 moto 1. In the last corner, Tanner went to go around the outside when he got bumped up and over the berm. He made a pass down the final straight to take 3rd from Van Berkel. It was determined he was off the track and the position was given back to Van Berkel. Acerbis markers appeared on the track soon after. They need to sort out the issue with where the legal track is in more places than just this one corner.
  21. Lars will race the MXGP at Lommel this weekend.
  22. Benoit led 250 moto 2 every lap but the last half of the last lap. He tipped over and handed the win to #12 Sebastien Racine.
  23. Benoit still took the overall with 1-2 motos.
  24. Kilroy rode alone 1:00 behind the lead 2 and collected enough points to clinch the 2025 250 Pro Am title.
  25. Preston’s dad and Kevin Tyler call him “5” because he never shows any emotion. Preston said he thinks he may have hit 7 later that day.
  26. #377 Daniel Elmore replaced a clutch between motos but there was a problem and he barely made it around the first lap of moto 2 and had to retire. 5-DNF dropped him to 11th on the day. It didn’t really affect him in his overall position in the points, but it certainly didn’t help.
  27. He also lost his GoPro on the track somewhere, so if you found one it’s likely his.
  28. The big double got #117 Michael DaSilva. He broke his tib/fib in 3 places and needed surgery to repair it.
  29. #71 Preston Masciangelo fried his clutch late in 450 moto 1 and they didn’t have time to get him ready for moto 2. 16-DNS put him 21st on the day.
  30. #763 is James Henshaw from the US. He must be the oldest on the line at 38.
  31. #48 Tommy Dallaire was tossing oppos over the big double all the way to the end of 450 moto 2.
  32. #519 Josh Cartwright showed up on a borrowed bike and finished an impressive 9-8 for 8th in the 450 class. He said he’ll drive up to Walton if anyone has a Kawasaki 450 he could ride.
  33. #131 Adrian Malaval came back from France and raced with the support of MX Deschambault. His bike didn’t sound like it was going to make to the flag in moto 2 but he still ran up in 3rd and finished there! 6-3 put him 4th, tied with Van Berkel. He’d like to race the entire series in 2026.
  34. Pettis fell on lap 1 of moto 1 and had to come back from around 8th.
  35. Ward fell around the halfway point of moto 1 and had to charge back to 4th/3rd.
  36. #610 Hayden Halstead and his dad drove from New Brunswick for another race.
  37. #375 Lawrence Fortin from Connecticut raced 2 classes: Premix and 250. He was 3rd in Premix and then went 13-20 in the 250 class.

Good luck to all the Canadians down at Loretta Lynn‘s. You can watch it all live on Racer TV:
