Welcome to Week #42 of the DMX Frid’Eh Update brought to you by Dirt Care. after a busy Thanksgiving weekend last week, it’s been a fairly mundane last few days for me here at the DMX home office. The weather has been amazing, so I’ve done as much cycling as I could squeeze with hopes of doing the final mountain bike race of the season next weekend at Turkey Point.

I don’t think many people have signed up for the 30K or 60K race yet because in late October the weather can definitely be the deciding factor. My plan this week was to simply do a bunch of miles after slacking off while we were away at the MXON, so I’ll be as ready as I can be should I decide to actually line up.

I just checked the extended forecast and it’s looking like sunny and 19C next Sunday. I guess I have no excuse now. I’ll go see if I can find one…

I went for a ride with an old high school buddy named Jamie Ruddock who works for Motovan. He said a few vet rider friends of his are looking to go rip up a motocross track somewhere on Saturday. I just checked the forecast for tomorrow and I don’t have an excuse to miss this either! Sunny and 22C. That’s perfect! I guess I should go replace the mouse-infested air filter on the old Yamaha YZ250 2-stroke and put the bike carrier on the back of the new van!

It sounds like the track of choice is going to be Swiona just southwest of London near the town of Dutton. I’ve never actually even ridden there before, so I’m looking forward to the chance to give it a shot. Let’s just make sure they’ve smoothed it all out for us old timers first!

OK, enough about me, let’s get to our rider of honour for Week #42.

Jerry Lorenz is the 37-year-old rider from Michigan who we’ve gotten to know over the last bunch of years as he’s made himself a bit of a regular at some of our eastern Canadian Triple Crown Series MX Nationals.

We spoke with him last year when he was #47 for his first-ever Frid’Eh Update interview and we learned a lot about him then. We back-tracked a tiny bit this year again, but we touched on a bunch of new things too.

He came up to Canada for a few rounds again in 2025. Here’s a look at his results:

He actually slips to #60 for the 2026 season, so you never know, this could be our last Update Interview with him!

Here’s what he had to say when we got in touch with him this week:

Direct Motocross: Hello again, Jerry. We did our first Update interview last year for Week #47. We learned quite a bit about you! You were doing 2 jobs last year. Is that still the case? How is your graphics company coming along with your wife?

Jerry Lorenz: Hey Billy! Yes, that is still the case. Things are going great. Super busy!

I can’t believe you turned Pro in 2005. There aren’t many racing Pro these days who can top that! Are you at the point in your riding where you’d consider doing the Vet classes or are you still in full-time Pro mode?

Haha, yea it’s been a while that I’ve been doing this. Umm, honestly, when I race locally I just race whatever class has the most entries. To do something like Loretta’s, I’d have to ride Plus 25 or Open Pro Sport since I have scored points, so if I have to race basically the pro classes at an amateur national I can keep racing the pro nationals.

And I have to ask, are you still improving skill-wise on the bike or is it now more about staying fit? Does it change your approach to training?

I honestly feel like the last couple years I have found a little more speed, but haven’t been able to put it to use at the races.. Haha. The training side of things is really hard now with work and then running our business and also having two little ones running around. Not a whole lot of time to get much done.

That’s definitely a full plate! Are you dealing with any lingering injuries or pains at this ripe old age of 37?

Honestly, I’ve been very fortunate and haven’t had a whole lot of injuries, so I still feel good, probably why I’m still doing this.

Aside from the Lawrence brothers, the 450 class down south is full of +30-year-old fathers these days. Does that motivate you to keep going? What’s the secret?

It is cool to see the guys staying longer and the older guys still running up front.. the way I see it is if they can do it, than I can too. Lol

You came up to Canada again this past summer to race the eastern rounds of the Canadian Triple Crown Series in the 450 class. Your best was an 11th place overall at Sand Del Lee. Is there a reason for that stand-out performance?

Yea, Sand Del Lee was a good day for me. I was actually able to ride a couple days leading up to the weekend, and that helped me a lot. There were a few rounds that I hadn’t touched a motorcycle during the week and it was really a last minute decision if I was gonna go race or not.

What track  do you like the most and like the least up in Canada?

I really like Gopher (Dunes), but Sand Del Lee is up there also… my least favorite is Deschambault. I’m not sure why but I struggle at that place for some reason, which is crazy cause it shapes up a lot like the tracks around my house that I ride.

What have you been doing since our series finished up?

Well, after Walton I think I went 7 or 8 weeks without touching a bike. I’ve rode a few days the last couple weeks but other than that I’ve been busy working.

Do you still head south for some training during the winter months or are you too busy at home?

For the most part I’m at home. We may do a long weekend around February/March but for the last few years I’ve stayed home.

Do you have any racing left this year?

As of right now is l do not. With work and our business I’m pretty booked up, unfortunately.

What is your Supercross history, by the way?

I rode Supercross for a few years, doing select east coast rounds. Being from Michigan it was hard because you had to live down south to ride Supercross and I was never able to do that.

Will we see you again next summer up here in Canada? And how long will you keep racing at this level?

Lol. Umm, more than likely, yea, you will see me. I enjoy racing the Triple Crown Series and everyone that is up there. I’ve said for prolly the past 3-4 years that I was done, but here we are still. Also, with my three-year-old now understanding racing and wanting to be around it, it’s cool. My dad loves Loretta’s and wants to go back someday, so I made a deal with him that if my kids decided they were gonna race and go to Loretta’s then I would qualify and go down there for the first year… my daughter will be 4 next June so we’ll see what happens. Lol

Jerry wasn’t happy with his results last summer, so it sounds like we’ll see him again in 2026. | Bigwave photo

Are you still motivated by finishes or is something else keeping you coming back for more racing?

I’m still motivated by finishes. I still feel I can run right around the top 10. Honestly, this year was a huge disappointment in my eyes. I was way better than what I showed and it definitely is not sitting well with me right now.

OK, it’s always nice to catch up with you. Good luck and is there anyone you’d like to thank?

Great chatting with you!  I’d just like to thank everyone that still supports me, my wife, my parents, Matt Crown and MCR suspension, Andy White and everyone at FXR, factory ride goggles, Magic Racing, Gaerne, Dunlop, Slade racing/ HGS exhausts, Mike metals, DT1 filters, Weatherby plumbing and heating, Guts, Ogio, Blud lubricants, Martin mx park, Hinson, Rynopower, and Jnkyard Designs.

Kawasaki Presented with #1 450 Plate at Walton Raceway

I was busy most of the day today getting to and from Walton Raceway to be there for the presentation of the #1 plate to Canadian Kawasaki. It was a nice presentation that the WLTN Kawasaki team put on and everyone was there except the rider who was on the bike, Phil Nicoletti. It was cool to see and meet the President of Canadian Kawasaki, Kazuya Ikebuchi.

I recorded pretty much the entire thing and will upload it to our Youtube channel if you want to check that out later. It’s a piece of Canadian Motocross history, so I like to capture and save it for the archives.
