Grab another cup on this holiday long weekend for Monday Morning Coffee where we talk about Motocross and usually lots more
By Billy Rainford
I hope everyone is enjoying the May Two-Four Weekend. To most, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Unfortunately, we’re not always guaranteed great weather in Ontario and we’re being reminded we live in Canada this go around.
With a high projected to be a mere…oh wait…the forecast has improved since I last looked at it yesterday! The sun is supposed to come out soon and we’ll hit 16 Celsius. Definitely better than the 11C and intermittent rain we dealt with yesterday. I’ll take it!
I wish I was at Sand Del Lee for Round 3 of the AMO Ontario Provincial Championships (OPC) Sunday because we had a mini National break out. Obviously, this was the MX101 FXR Yamaha team’s home race, so they were all out and on the track for some final testing and preparations before they head out to Alberta for the start of the 2025 Canadian Triple Crown Series MX Nationals.
I would have been there except for the fact that…wait for it…I’m still looking for a new van. I’ve at least decided on the actual van I want, so that’s a start. I’m going for a Ford Transit 250 mid-roof. The problem is finding one that ticks all the boxes.
Worst case scenario, you see me in the DMX Van one more time out in Alberta. No, I can’t believe I just said that either. But enough about me and my van dilemma, let’s talk about what, if anything, we learned from the racing.
Here’s a look at the Pro Am results:

First off, Jess Pettis was like a Swiss watch and clicked off some of the most consistent lap times you’re ever going to see! He’s a great starter and led every lap of both 12-lap motos for the convincing win.
In moto 1, he finished with a 30-second lead over his 250 teammate Preston Kilroy. In moto 2, the lead was up close to that again before he shut it down to cross the line with a 21-second lead, again over Kilroy on his 250.

Preston had to work his way around a few riders in the first moto to get himself up to 2nd. He had a better start in Moto 2 and was 2nd the entire time.

#12 Sebastien Racine and #24 Dylan Rempel on his Red Bull KTM had a couple nice battles, so I’m looking forward to seeing which of our younger fast guys finishes ahead of the other this summer.

After seeing #6 Ryder McNabb at Gopher Dunes, everyone is going to have to level up to run with him in the 250 class, I’d say. Kilroy has had some good rides in the class in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, so he may be the closest.

#107 Lars Van Berkel made another appearance here in Canada on his Guaranteed Comfort Hanover Honda 450. He had a good start in the first moto but got passed a few times and dropped from 2nd to 6th at the flag.
Things got worse for him in Moto 2 as he was in 5th place early but then had some troubles and only got 7 laps in.
We’ll talk to him to get his thoughts as soon as we can.

#14 Quinn Amyotte rode well, like usual, but still needs to find a way to get consistent starts in the 450 class. He got caught by a flinch and got stuck in the gate in moto 1 and had to come from last. He had a nice battle trying to get around Rempel late in this one.
He nailed a better start in Moto 2 and headed out in 2nd place with Pettis, but was passed by Kilroy and then had Rempel closing on him to the flag.

The top Intermediate rider in the group was #111 Gavin Forsbrey from Whitby, ON. I got to see him ride at Auburn Hills MX a couple weeks ago and he looked fast and smooth. He was in some nice battles with #161 Jamieson MacDonald and #61 Ben Mistelbacher there, but neither of them were at Round 3 this past weekend.
Gavin finished a very respectable 7th place with only Pro riders ahead of him.

#40 Zach Ufimzeff is Van Berkel’s 250 teammate and is still trying to get im through this energy-sapping situation he’s been dealing with. It looks like he was able to put in some consistent laps, but his speed just isn’t quite there yet. Hopefully, he can keep making progress and we see him show up at Round 1 ready to put in 2 hard motos.
Out west, the Future West Moto MX series made its way to Revelstoke, BC for Round 3. Not many Pro riders made the trek, but there were a few fast riders keeping things interesting up front.
Interesting to see #44 Noah Porter go undefeated over #18 Parker Eales in the Pro Am class. Noah showed some good speed last season and really stood out at the WCAN in Alberta last summer.

#3 Kaylie Kayer finished 1:09 ahead of 2nd place in Moto 1! She’s poised to take over where Eve Brodeur left off on her Triumph.
It’s great to see #391 Jess Foster back at the races. I think the new WMX Vet class at the TransCan at Walton Raceway may bring a few of out top racers from years past…hopefully.
Shelby Turner 4th at GNCC
Always a popular race, The Hoosier at Ironman MX took place this weekend for Round 7 of the GNCC Series. Canadian Shelby Turner took 4th place and sits 4th in points.

We’ve got Josh Snider coming over to see if he can figure out our MGB that we didn’t even drive last summer, so I’d better end this here so I’m ready when he gets here. If you’re in the London area and want a good and obviously honest and reliable person to work on your vehicles, definitely get in touch with Josh.
I’ve got my long MTB ride planned for later this afternoon. If anyone reads this and wants to tag along, let me know ASAP!
We’re just 1 week away from the start of the AMA Pro Motocross series at Fox Raceway in Pala, California. Good luck to everyone getting ready for that. Let’s hope we see a couple Canadians behind the gate.
Enjoy the rest of your long weekend, everyone.
