Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column

Grab another cup for this holiday Monday edition of Monday Morning Coffee where we talk about some of what happened in Motocross and more…

By Billy Rainford

Welcome to the August Civic Holiday. Is that what it’s called? That’s all it says on my calendar. I hope everyone is enjoying themselves as we get set to celebrate the biggest week on our Motocross Calendar – The TransCan at Walton Raceway!

Riders and families have traveled from far and wide to be here for the culmination of competition in our sport to see who is the best at every level of racing. From 50cc (4-6) to +50 Vet riders, there will be champions crowned in every age group.

The big new for us here at DMX is that we’ve made a move in our DMX Total Devotion Award. Here’s what we posted on Instagram:

First off, we would like to thank @clubmx for their many years of partnership with Direct Motocross with our annual DMX Total Devotion Award at the #transcan at @waltonraceway Many riders have enjoyed their free week at the top notch training facility in Chesterfield, South Carolina, over the years.

Unfortunately, they have changed the way they approach rider visits at their tracks and are moving toward monthlong stays. Not to mention, they are already booked solid for the coming winter season! Again, thank you.

Moving forward, we’re happy to announce that we will partner with our old friends at @gpfmx in Cairo, Georgia, for the winner’s prize at the TransCan.

Also, @jwoods26 will take the reins as track builder at Walton for this year’s Amateur National Championship and will be on stage to help hand out the Total Devotion Award on Saturday night.

Remember, no matter what happens next week, keep your head down and your effort up because people are watching! Huge thank you to GPF for stepping up and partnering with us for the foreseeable future.

Let’s go racing!

This 11th-hour change hasn’t left me a lot of time to get a unique trophy set up, but I’ll get to a shop Tuesday and order something up to have it ready for presentation on Saturday night when all the dust of competition has settled.

I know Kourtney Lloyd is “upset” I’m not handing out a flower pot as the trophy anymore, but it seems nobody got the reference…

Speaking of our Team Canada MXON Manager, we’ll have an official presentation of our 2025 Motocross of Nations team on Saturday night during the awards ceremony. Of course, we already know the team will be Jess Pettis, Tanner Ward, and Sebastien Racine, but it is still to be decided which 450 rider will ride the MXGP class and which will run in the MX3/Open class.

Here’s a look at the full schedule for this coming week at Walton Raceway:

I’ve been trying to figure out my workflow for the TransCan this week and I think I’ve come up with what I want to do. Hopefully, this is what people who aren’t on site would get the most value out of.

I’ll do like I did at the ECAN at Motocross Deschambault last week and post immediate results of the motos with little video clips edited together after each race. My plan is to also include the podium speeches of the winners each time they get interviewed on stage, too. I hope this gives people stuck at home or at the office the best value. Feel free to add your thoughts in the comment section on Facebook.

Here’s a look at the champions from the WCAN and WCAN:

I headed over to Vision Built Tracks in Putnam, Ontario, on Saturday to check out a bunch of riders getting in some clay practice before Walton this week. There was a good number of riders there.

#71 Preston Masciangelo stretching out his arm on the big uphill triple.
It was great to see #6 Ryder McNabb back on the bike, and he was looking good!

I took a whole bunch of photos and video while I was there, but I’m running out of time here at World HQ. I will post a short report from Saturday when I get home but you can scroll through a bunch of photos on the DMX SmugMug page HERE.

OK, gotta go! Enjoy your last day of sanity before all the action gets underway with the Opening Ceremonies at Walton Tuesday evening at 7:00pm. See you there!

Oh, if you feel like commenting, I plan on broadcasting the Opening Ceremonies live on our YouTube channel again. Is that something people at home appreciate?

See you at the races…
