Week #31 belongs to Gavin Brough who calls Mesquite, Nevada, home. | Bigwave photo

Welcome to Week #31 of the DMX Frid’Eh Update brought to you by Dirt Care. We’re on a week off in the Canadian Triple Crown Series Motocross Nationals, so all eyes are focussed on Loretta Lynn’s in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

Gavin Brough is the rider running the #31 up here this season. We’ve seen the Brough Family up here at our races for nearly 15 years now. Gavin is actually the youngest of the 3 we’ve had up here.

Here’s a look at his season so far:

We got in touch with Gavin this week, so let’s get right to our interview:

Here’s what Gavin had to say this week when we contacted him. | Bigwave photo

Direct Motocross: Hello Gavin. You and your brothers have been coming up to race in Canada for a long time. Can you tell us how it started?

Gavin Brough: My oldest brother, Riley (Brough), first came up here in 2012. I was only 8 years old so I don’t remember much, but I know the series was pretty popular back then. So my dad and Riley had known about it and our good buddy, Morgan Burger, had raced it in years past. Riley saw it as a good opportunity to get experience racing long motos with lots of experienced riders.

Then eventually McCoy (Brough) followed his footsteps and raced his first national in 2015, I believe. We’re all 5 years apart in age and I’m the youngest. So I always looked up to them and wanted to race up here just like they did. So, here we are 13 years later!

In all the years, who’s had the best result up here?

Me and McCoy are tied with the best moto finish with my 6th place at Cold Lake this year, and his 6th place at Kamloops 2016 in the 250 class. I’ve got them beat in overalls with a 5th place at Cold Lake, which is pretty nice bragging rights for me.

Last summer, Gavin raced the AMA Nationals and then our series the following day 3 times! | Bigwave photo

How many times have you done an AMA National and then one of our Nationals the next day?

I did that 3 times last year. Racing the 250 class on Saturday in America and 450 class on Sunday in Canada. Thanks to our good family friend Tj Bronson for driving my 450 up here so I could fly back and forth.

Have you done that this season?

I wanted to fully focus on the Canadian Nationals this year so I didn’t want to do that again this year. I wanted to be recovered and ready to go on Sundays to see how good I could do up here.

You missed a couple rounds this year. What happened?

The week after the Gopher Dunes national I had a practice crash which hyper-extended my knee resulting in a tibia plateau fracture. I was lucky enough to not tear anything and didn’t need surgery. So I took two and a half weeks off and showed up to round 7 at Deshambault not knowing how it would feel while riding, but it turned out alright on Sunday and ended up with 9th overall.

Gavin missed a couple rounds due to injury and is hoping to end the season with a top 5 at Walton Raceway. | Bigwave photo

With 1 round left, you’re sitting 10th in 450 points. Are you happy with how things have gone?

I’ve had some good rides I’m proud of, but obviously getting injured and missing 2 rounds was unfortunate. So I’m not completely satisfied with the season. But I’m excited for Walton to fight for another top 5. That’s my goal!

How long have you been living in Mesquite and what do you do there?

My family moved to Mesquite in 2020 when we took over the motocross track there. Since then we’ve just been steadily improving the track and facility. I mainly help with track prep, whether it’s the dozer, tractor, or water truck.

What will you do after Walton?

After Walton I’m heading towards home to Rock Springs, Wyoming, for round 6 of our family’s race series.

Go check it out at rmxseries.com!

How long will you guys keep coming back up here to race? I know there’s not a ton of money in it, so what’s in it for you?

I don’t have a definite answer for you on that one, but I enjoy racing up here and definitely want to come back next year! This was my first year doing the whole series (other than missing 2 rounds from injury) and I’ve really enjoyed it. There’s not much money in America for me either, so in my eyes I’d rather be fighting for top 5’s up here rather than fighting just to qualify for AMA Nationals.

He’d rather fight for top 5’s up here than fight to qualify down south, so we’ll see him again up here in 2026. | Bigwave photo

That makes sense. Do you have a favourite track up here?

A perfect track for me is a deep, rutted, clay track. So I’d say Walton is my favorite track. Some people might call me crazy, but I really enjoyed Cold Lake this year also.

OK, good luck in Walton and who would you like to thank?

Definitely my parents for hauling me around and providing me with the opportunity to race up here, Chris Hymas from Pocatello Power Sports, TJ with 891 suspension, Fasst company and the whole Townsend family, Flow Vision goggles, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC and MSR gear, Local Hero for the graphics, and of course my brothers, Riley and McCoy.

Lars Van Berkel Racing Lommel MXGP

Lars Van Berkel racing MXGP in Lommel. | Bigwave photo

When I asked #107 Lars Van Berkel what he was going to do on his weekend off from the series, he told me something I wasn’t expecting – he’s race MXGP in Lommel. Yes, the European track that is always mentioned along with Gopher Dunes as one of the toughest sand tracks in the world. Good luck, Lars.
