Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column by Bigwave about Motocross and other interesting topics

Grab yourself another cup for this week’s Monday Morning Coffee about what happened over the weekend in Motocross and more…

By Billy Rainford

I had high hopes when I left the house Sunday morning for Round 2 of the AMO Ontario Provincial Championships at Auburn Hills MX just outside Auburn, Ontario. I had done my due diligence by checking and re-checking the local forecast and it said it would be sunny and cold in the morning, the wind would pick up in the afternoon, and it would get a little cloudy. That’s it.

I was a little doubtful, but I put my trust in the people who are supposed to have a handle on this stuff and headed out the door ready for a cool, spring day at the races.

However, history has shown that 90% of the time it rains 100% of the time when we head to this little slice of Ontario racing heaven just northeast of Clinton, but, again, I put my trust in somone else’s hands.

I was also keen to hit this day of racing because it was going to be a good chance for me to see #6 Ryder McNabb on his Guaranteed Comfort Honda 450 for the first time. I wanted to see what the 2-time Canadian 250 champion looked like on the big bike.

The day started out as expected – cold and sunny with a nice crop of up-and-coming riders to pay attention to for what was some great racing.

The #6 450 of Ryder McNabb in the pits at Auburn MX.

Of course, when the Pro/Am class came out for their practice, I got myself trackside and looked to see who was there and for, of course, Ryder McNabb. Unfortunately, he was nowhere to be seen. I wandered up to his pits to see what was up and found his bike sitting on the stand but couldn’t find Ryder himself.

I eventually found him in the infield standing with Bobby Gravel who has stepped away from the sport after that scary crash and resulting hospital stay last year. It was great to see both of them and catch up a little.

Bobby is hoping to go down the road to becoming a pilot, so that was great to hear.

Ryder told me he did a few laps in practice the day before as well as some practice starts but that he had decided not to race on Sunday.

Ryder in the pick-up watching some mud racing before heading out.

Dang, I wouldn’t be seeing him rip around with Tanner Ward, Quinn Amyotte, Tanner Scott, Gavin Forsebrey and the rest on this day.

I’ve heard it said before, and I can’t speak from any first-hand experience, that some riders feel the track is too fast. Like I said, I can’t comment because I’ve never raced it, but when I talk to racers about it, it’s been expressed to me on a few occasions.

I am, however, on record saying that I think not racing on fast, big tracks is what adds to our riders’ struggles when they head south to do a one-off AMA Pro Motocross event at one of the famed US tracks.

I’ll leave this for a discussion between people who are actually behind the dropping gates these days; I’m just behind a camera and a keyboard. All I can do is ask someone why they weren’t on the track or how their day went.

I shot a ton of photos and will be posting a couple columns about the racing and then a full Photo Gallery for people to look at and purchase photos if they wish.

I also shot a bunch of vide to edit and post, so I’ll get at that as soon as I can, too.

There was some amazing racing throughout the day and a lot of it was between the two Priority MX GasGas 450 riders, #84 Tanner Ward and #14 Quinn Amyotte. It’s all fun and games until you start rubbing elbows on a regular basis.

#14 Quinn Amyotte and #84 Tanner Ward were this close for the better part of the day on Sunday. Quinn’s 2-1 beat Tanner’s 1-2.
#521 AJ Beth took the coveted “Stud Status” by going 1-1 in the 250 Junior class that had 2 qualifiers.
#123 JR Gionette finished 1-2 in the 65 Open class to take the win.
And I don’t know anything about #74 Carson Sanders other than he’s a young ripper from Michigan and he took the win in the Schoolboy 1 class.

Like I said, watch for a more in depth column on the day of racing.

Denver Supercross

Well, we’re heading into the final week of Monster Energy AMA Supercross racing in Salt Lake City with #94 Ken Roczen and #96 Hunter Lawrence separated by just 1 point. That makes this a winner takes all situation. Or, as Ricky Carmichael will surely say, “A must situation...”

I’m on record as picking Hunter to win the title this year. It was a wild stat they put up during the Peacock broadcast showing champions who won in the same season as they got their first win. It’s a short list and if Hunter wins the title he’ll put his name on it.

Like I said in Cleveland, I’ve never heard a louder crowd reaction than what I heard when Kenny won there. People are rallying behind him this season and it’s pretty wild to witness. If you’re in SLC this weekend, you’ll be sure to notice it. I watched Denver from my couch and you couldn’t really hear it on TV the way it sounds live, trust me.

I love this Brown Dog Wilson photo of Haiden Deegan from Denver because it shows you the intensity Haden is bringing to the 450 Outdoor game.

This final round also brings us one week closer to the start of the Pro Motocross season that will see Haiden Deegan make the step up to the 450 class to join returning champion Jet Lawrence. I’m not sure I can remember bench racing being quite this intense! I liked it when they talked about it on the broadcast and RC said, “Been there done that on the rivalry front.” His battles with both James Stewart and Chad Reed are the things of legend and everyone and their dog had an opinion and was ready to let it be known. That’s how the Summer of ’26 is setting up.

Here’s a look at the Denver highlights:

Have a great week, everyone. I just made the mistake of looking at the weather forecast for my area and after today we are in for a pretty crappy week. I then took a look to see what’s happening on the west coast and you guys are in for a treat, so enjoy!

I’ll get to work on some of the videos from the Pro/Am class and more as well as a photo report and gallery. Thanks for reading, and I hope this got you through another cup to start your week.

We posted a video on Instagram and Facebook of young #157 Oliver Groves in his Santa suit at Auburn. Clearly, he’s earned the honour of saying it: “See you at the races...”
