Faces at the Races | 2025 Vancouver Supercross

By Billy Rainford

Let’s have a look at some of the people who were at Round 2 of the 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship at BC Place in Vancouver Canada in this instalment of ‘Faces at the Races.’

Sebastien Tortelli is the Team Principal for the Stark Future team.
Tony Alessi is the Team Principal for the Moto Concepts Honda team.

I thought it would be fun to hear how the electric team was being treated by the rest of the paddock and Tony was quick to give us his thoughts on the subject. In case you missed his response, you can listen to it here:

Larry Brooks is the Team Principal for the Progressive Suzuki team (I guess he got his eyes fixed because he famously wore glasses under his goggles back in the day). They actually made up 2/3 of the SX1 podium in Vancouver. You heard me.
I asked Bud Racing Kawasaki representative a question about Cole Thompson and I either called Daniel Damian or Damian Daniel. Either way, I messed up. Sorry about that. Apparently, I’d do it again, too!
#94 Ken Roczen came into Vancouver after winning all 3 races in Argentina. Vancity wasn’t going to be as easy.
They pulled Noah Viney in beside Max Anstie, Roczen, and Tomac for some Canadian flavour. He still hates interviews.
A few years ago, I had Kristen Beat on the DMX Show before the Prince George National. Here she is interviewing undefeated SX2 rider #99 Max Anstie.
#21 Jason Anderson always seems to be having a good time at the races. Ohhh, right…Team Fried.
Obviously, I added some yellow to this shot because it doesn’t look like the surface of the moon.
It seemed weird at first but it didn’t take long to accept Eli Tomac in orange. John isn’t there yet.
You have to take every opportunity to get John and Eli in the same shot at the races that you can this year because you just never know…
🎶 Did you ever go into an Irishman’s shanty… 🎵
The track was a little off as far as its rhythm went, as you can see by our lap of Eli on Friday. They got it sorted out for the racing on Saturday and everyone looked much better on the track.
I went to my first Loretta Lynn’s in 2010 and Cole Thompson and Joey Savatgy were buddies way back then.
That’s #88 Devin Simonson, #29 Henry Miller, and #110 Kyle Peters.
Go ahead and name these peeps for me.
#32 Justin Cooper was the other Wildcard entry. Things were going very well until he lost a fight with a tuff block.
Walton native Caden Lee is the mechanic for #200 Ryan Breece.
There’s Ryan now. I’m expecting a little more “shoviness” from him as the series progresses.
The crew in Vancouver was ripe with Canadians. Chris Pawlitsky is going to hate this shot but it shows you his usual state – happy AF.
I told Scott Tokely I was going to Photoshop a big smile on his face. Meh, I couldn’t be bothered.
I’m not sure why but I get a kick out of this Jason Anderson shot.
Maybe it seems normal because it’s a little Ryan Dungy-esque? Is that it?
A good crowd lined up for autographs. Both SX2 and SX1 riders sat for 45 minutes and not everyone made it through.
Brock and Jenni Hoyer did though!
A little construction near the main entrance didn’t seem to bother anyone.
Did you buy any memorabilia? I didn’t but this photo will always fit and look brand new!
This happens to me on a regular basis. “Hey Billy, can you take our picture?” “Do you want me in it too?” “No, we’re good…” Cal Nowicki put this group of Albertans together at the pre-race Fan Zone.
I can’t even begin to explain what a Tyler Chopyk #126 encounter is like. Let me sum it by telling you he dropped and did some clapping push ups for Emily right here. “Living the dream!” There’s no one else like him!
I see you, JSR. He and Matt Deroy were on hand in case Eli needed anything.
This shot of Cole and Chloe cracks me up. I’m guessing you can see them like this away from the track too.
It was great to see Jamie Hellam and his son at the races. Did you know you can ride at the Chilliwack Heritage Park all winter? Contact Jamie. Here’s his cell number….
I realize now that I didn’t snap any shots of Daryl Murphy on his own. Oh well, nothing can get him down from Cloud 9 after his Saskatchewan Roughriders won the Grey Cup.
Lee Fryberger and Renee Turner looking very official. Someone get Lee a clipboard!
Kevin Thompson loves a good clipboard reference.
Club MX connection – Coty Schock and Kyle Peters.
Rumours of Kyle Chisholm’s retirement were greatly exaggerated. Unfortunately, he got helped off the track after a high-speed crash.
#98 Austin Politelli and #43 Cullin Park.
Cheryl Viney keeping a close eye on Noah. Ulf was building the new track for KTM in Murrieta I’m told.
Justin Cooper took the top spot in the Superpole which puts the top 4 qualifiers up against each other.
“Gimme more power, Scotty!” “She’ll no take the strain, Captain!” #nerdalert
I was hoping for a different “Captain” opportunity here, but it never really materialized.
Max and #64 Robbie Wageman. Robbie never really got going in Vancouver. He was just rolling slowly after something happened to him in one of the races.
Quadlock Honda teammates Savatgy and #1 Shane McElrath.
Still smiling.
#46 Justin Hill also had a bit of an off night in Van.
I’m accepting help from any Europeans who would like to caption this one…
I’m also waiting for more out of #719 Vince Friese on the Stark, too. Drop him down to the SX2 class so he can rekindle his “friendship” with Cole. Anyone remember that Supercross season? They couldn’t stay away from each other!
WSX treated us to a pretty decent dinner in the Press Box so I just snapped this shot from my seat up there. Do you see yourself?
Bud Racing set to get introduced to the crowd.
Noah getting ready to get introduced to the crowd.
Name 1 player on my team, Enzo Lopes! #gocanucks
Eli always gets the biggest cheer and Vancouver was no different.
If you’re a female racer and think you can beat her in a race, I’ve got news for you…you can’t.
Lachlan “La La” Turner sat in for a segment with Jeff Emig and Daniel Blair. Side note: I thought Daniel was trying to tell a couple people to move. Turned out he was leaning down and trying to shake my hand. 🤦‍♂️ Oh, and he hit the boat…
That’s Brad “Call Me Stephen” Nemeth telling the crowd about the track build.
Falyn Fryberger took board duties in Vancouver.
Whenever I see either Chris or Steve Sulyok and snap a photo, the caption is almost always about how nice they are. I’ve never seen them in the same place at the same time, so I had to make this photo op happen down on the track. You’ll never meet 2 friendlier people at the races.
This column isn’t for riding shots, but I need to give #95 Lance Kobusch kudos for giving us something to shoot over the finish line.
Gatlin Dean and Justin Thompson.
Coty Schock was 2nd in SX2.
My dad was British. He would have enjoyed hearing this anthem.
Thanks for the help with tickets, Stephen. I still haven’t heard from the guy I offered 4 tickets to at the Toronto Airport! I assume he got in and enjoyed the racing. Rene??? Did you??
The bottom bowl was pretty full. I haven’t heard actual numbers but I’d be surprised if they didn’t beat last year.
Still smiling…
Hello over there…
…and hello over there.
Rick Bradshaw (Schrader Motors) was there helping out, but wasn’t wearing his all whites. Booo!
Where’s Emily? 🤘🏼
What are you talking about? He was wearing that before he got to the track!
Was there a fight in the stands and did someone have a bloody nose? Yep. Em said she saw someone else get tossed in another section earlier.
Max hung around and signed some autographs.
Thanks for yelling out, guys.
Moto is a family affair with the Frybergers.
The name’s Marshal…Supercross Marshal. 🍸
That’s our media guy Bogdan De Berg. Thanks for running a smooth show.
If you show up in bright Leatt MX gear, you get to say it: “See you at the races…

I said last year that I wouldn’t miss another one of these. However, I’m not sure how the future looks for hosting the series on the west coast of Canada, so we’ll have to wait and see if this was the last one…
