Monday Morning Coffee | 2026 Houston Supercross
Grab yourself a cup and dip into this week’s Monday Morning Coffee opinion column where we talk about some of what happened in Motocross…

By Billy Rainford
In the winter, I always like to start these things with a little weather report. Depending on where you live, you’ll either be jealous or have deep sympathy for what we’re going through. I posted a couple photos of a MTB ride Sunday afternoon, so I ‘ll let that Instagram post sum it up for you:
Seriously, it has been ridiculously cold here the past couple weeks. I know that even people as far south as Florida are seeing abnormally low temps right now. GPF was forced to cancel an event and Club MX is showing videos of people tobogganing!
Today happens to be February 2nd which means it’s Groundhog Day! If Wiarton Willie sees his shadow we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow we are supposed to get an early spring. Well, I can see right now that the sun is shining brightly through the window of my office, so I think we can expect some bad news from the rodent.
🚨 Breaking news! 🚨
“South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Jay Kirkland confers with Wiarton Willie Monday morning before passing along word that the albino groundhog did not see his shadow, so it will be an early spring.”
However:
“Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which means there will be six more weeks of winter.“
One of these is FAKE NEWS! I guess we’ll know who it is when the Ides of March arrive.
Let’s get to some Supercross.
The Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series made its was east to Houston, Texas, for Round 4 at NRG Stadium on Saturday. I wasn’t there but I see that everyone was wearing “toques” and gloves so even Texas hasn’t ben spared this crazy cold!
We had 3 Canadian racers trying to qualify Saturday night. Bring that it was a Triple Crown round, it meant that only 18 riders would qualify directly to the 3-race night program. The rest would need to race a LCQ where the top 4 riders in both the 250 West and 450 class would move on to the races. These TC races are always more difficult for the privateer riders and it can affect their turnout.

Fortunately, it didn’t stop young AVL International Motorsports Husqvarna rider #585 Blake Davies from Mission, BC from making the drive all the way from Kevin Urqhart‘s where he’s staying in Menifee, California. He hopped in his pick-up truck and made the 1500-mile journey solo to give it his best shot.
Q: 26th (Top 18 moved directly to races)
LCQ: 7th (Top 4 moved on. He charged into the first turn after a good jump. Less than 10 seconds out of 4th)
Blake’s Instagram post:

NXT LVL GasGas rider #800 Preston Masciangelo from Brantford, Ontario, also made the trip east from California to try and back up his Main qualification at Anaheim 2 the week before where he scored his first points with a 19th place finish.
Q: 27th (He was just .2 seconds behind Blake)
LCQ: 11th (Moved up from outside top 15. 20 seconds behind 4th.
Preston’s Instagram post:

We were missing GA Checkpoint Fox Yamaha rider #214 Tyler Gibbs from Abbotsford, BC this week due to an injury he suffered to his elbow during practice the week before A2. He plans on taking a bit of time to recuperate and then get back to the line for Glendale, Arizona, this coming weekend, but we’ll know more on his condition as we get closer.

Heartbeat Hot Sauce Solitaire Yamaha’s #66 Cole Thompson from Brigden, Ontario, once again lined up in the 450 class. We all know how smooth Cole is and were all waiting for the day he made the step to the 450 class.
Q: 24th
LCQ: 5th
As always, the LCQ was a great place to watch some close racing action. Cole was back in 9th early in the LCQ where only the top 4 would move on to the 3 races later in the evening. He crept closer and closer the the all-important 4th place rider who was, of course, Partzilla PRMX Kawasaki rider, #784 Cade Clason.
Cole closed to his rear wheel late in the short, 5-minute race, but Cade was able to react and hold on for the position. They were separated by less than a second at the flag.
Cole’s Instagram post:
Cole will now switch his attention back to the AMA FIM North American Arenacross Championship that will head to Prescott (pronounced like “Biscuit” I learned last time I was there), Arizona, for round 6 where he is sitting 2nd in points to arch rival MCR Honda’s #200 Ryan Breece.

Mike Beaudin Rides Again!
I just saw something I thought you might all enjoy. After I clicked “SUBMIT” on this MMC, I added it to our Facebook page and this post was at the top of the feed. Mike Beaudin raced Snocross this past weekend! So amazing to see. Congratulations, Mike. Here’s his post from FB:
He doesn’t have it set as shareable, so I hope he doesn’t mind this copy/paste:
Its been 3,129 days since I raced competitively, and 3,129 days since breaking my back disabling everything below my belly button. Yesterday I went racing again. Something I always knew I could do, something that has crossed my mind every single day since that fateful day.
Though I couldn’t seat bounce the jump faces, launch the triples or doubles, position myself to rail the turns or be aggressive as I once could.. It still meant the world to me to smell the race gas, listen to Dave Bell through the P.A, feel those pre race staging jitters, feel my heart rate soar as we all waited for the light to turn green.. to see and hear the spectators in the stands, watch the finish line flag man wave the green, white and checkered flags.. to return to the trailer after the race and know I accomplished something memorable once again. It meant everything to me yesterday.
I raced Snowcross yesterday. And I am so thankful to of done it with the amazing people that were behind me yesterday. I want to Thank a very huge thank you to my Dad Denis Beaudin for being brave to support me in getting me there, loading and unloading my sled, being by my side through every moment yesterday. I love you so much Dad. Thank you. Dave Bell Dawn McClintock for Always being there for me FXR RacingFXR Pro Fish for making this memorable day possible with Joe, Miranda, Jennifer Labossiere and Bruno Mauti at Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA) for making me feel so welcome at their event and making sure I had what I needed.. truly heart warming hospitality that made this day more than memorable.. Thank you so much. The Weir brothers @jakeweir_459 and @trentw458 (4x Canadian National Snowcross Champion and their awesome buddy @ryder346 for lending me their mandatory @tekridertekvest , packing my gate.. warming up my sled on the line and making sure I had the best possible chance at a great start .. what an HONOR to have such support from such a team that knows what it takes to win Snowcross races.. truly couldn’t have a better crew behind me yesterday.
I am beyond grateful and thankful for yesterday.. in a blink of an eye it is all over and under my belt. Also a huge Thank you to my Mom Jackie B MacNeil and Norman Link for your love and encouragement leading up to and on this day.. my sister Amanda Beaudin for supporting my decision and praying for protection and the best possible outcome, and all the good luck and positive messages from my friends and family that knew how important this day means to me..
