Monday Morning Coffee Opinion Column

Check out this week’s Monday Morning Coffee column where we talk about some of what happened in Motocross over the weekend and usually more…

By Billy Rainford

Well, I literally just walked in the door from the drive home from Gainesville, Florida, for the 54th running of the Mini O’s at Gatorback Cycle Park. I timed it to get home while our dog, Olive, was out being walked and she’d come home and I’d be here. It worked like a charm. I hid until the walked had dried off her feet. I could hear Olive our full-size Aussiedoodle whimpering a little because she knew I was home. Talk about a warm welcome! If you’re a dog owner, you know what I mean.

And if you’ve done the long drive from Florida to Ontario, or a long drive anywhere for that matter, you know how I’m feeling right now. I’m a little rough around the edges to say the least. There’s a weird buzz you get that stops you from going directly to bed, and that’s what I’m dealing with right now. Having said that, I’ll try to put together a short, semi-coherent MMC to get you through another cup on this December 1st edition.

I’ve still got a month left on my complimentary Sirius Satellite radio, so I was scrolling up and down the dial on the road. I found the Dateline channel and I listened to crime stories the entire drive this morning. It sits one up from the Hallmark channel that is playing 24/7 Christmas music, so I’d drop it down a click to get into the Holiday spirit for a few minutes and then get back to the cases. Crazy stuff. It’s just the audio from past programs but it helps pass the miles.

The Mini O’s was great again this year. We didn’t get a single drop of rain and had a mix of temperatures. It started out pretty warm with humidity for the SX portion and then we woke up to -1C mornings for the last couple days. It warmed up to between 15 and 20 so it wasn’t horrible.

We had a record number of entries and they are capped at a number somewhere around 7000. It’s got to be the single biggest amateur (or professional for that matter) motocross event in the world. I spoke to one of the family members and they said that Loretta Lynn’s claims that honour because they include all of the qualifiers, but I’m not counting all that for this title claim.

A ton of people actually got denied entry! Who knows how high the number could climb if they didn’t cap it?! I spoke with Tyler Shewchyk and he said he tried to get into the Pro Sport classes but they filled up within 12 hours.

The only way they could accept any more entries in the future would be to extend the event even more. It already goes for over a week as it is! People would then have to take even more time off work and school, so it doesn’t look like they’ll consider this any further, but never say never!

With so many Canadians in attendance, I tried to figure out the best way to get the information back home to family and friends. I decided to do like I did for the TransCan at Walton Raceway and post video clips with little blurbs after every moto I could capture up to our Instagram page that automatically also posts to our Facebook page. Actually, long story, but it was set up to post to my personal FB page and I had to struggle to remember how to change that while I was down there and got it figured out a couple days into the event.

I hope that helped everyone follow along with the action because unless you were at the front like maybe Wyatt Kerr, Mason Murdy or Hayden Dupuis, you likely didn’t see a lot of our riders on the RacerTV broadcast.

Speaking of that, I really get a kick out of these announcers on the broadcast. Do you enjoy Rodney Tomlinson, Wes Cain, Megawatt, and Dean Dyess? I think they’re pretty hilarious. Oh, and informative too, no?

It’s Rodney who yells, “Gooood morning Mini Oooooohs!” every morning of the week. Apparently, they asked him not to do in on Thanksgiving morning for some reason. Or maybe it was Friday morning after people were up late the night before partaking in Thanksgiving festivities. I guess that makes sense. They sure take that holiday seriously in the USA.

I want to thank Mitch Cooke and the gang over at Callus Moto for sponsoring DMX coverage of the event this year. It was because of this partnership that Derrick Fisher was brought to my attention. He’s back racing and is a sponsored Callus rider. I grabbed him for an interview at the end of the week:

Derrick is probably a little surprised by all the love we showed him this week. Haha.

I’ll get to more coverage and results of our riders as soon as I get settled here at home, but you can peruse the results from the event HERE in the meantime.

While I was down in Florida, we had Canadians racing all over the place.

2025 West Coast Arenacross Results

Heading into the series, I did a podcast interview with Julien Benek who admitted he’s had way more than his fair share of concussions and was a little uncertain about his longterm future racing. Well, he went undefeated and Kyle Springman, who was snapping the pics and video for us, said he was basically in a class by himself out there. That’s good news.

Tyler Gibbs ended up tweaking his knee and sat out the final round. Kyle mentioned he thought that it wasn’t going to affect his West Coast 250 Supercross plans and he was already headed back down to Kevin Urqhart‘s place in Menifee, California, to continue his preparations. That’s also good news.

It was cool that they brought American rider Bryton Carroll in to race our guys beside Washington State regular Collin Jurin. It looks like they both had the pace to compete but Collin usually only does a Friday or 2 and Bryton didn’t have his own bike, so he was on a borrowed, stock Yamaha from Dylan Delaplace. Very generous offer, Dylan.

Here’s a look at the final standings.

OK, I’m going to have to end it here because it’s already late and I can barely type on the keyboard witout making a mistake every three words or so. Plus, I have to go out and get our snowblower working because we’ve already had 3 snowstorms here this season!

Have a great week, everyone.

I’m gonna let #412 Boone Lloyd say it this week because if this is the first time you’re saying his name in your head, trust me, it won’t be the last! “See you at the races...” | Bigwave photo
