What Happened to Dylan Wright’s Bike at Gopher Dunes in Moto 1?
By Billy Rainford
So, what happened to Dylan Wright‘s bike in the first moto at Gopher Dunes? We spoke with team owner Derek Schuster to get some answers. There are a lot of people asking questions and making assumptions, so let’s get to the bottom of it.
They have been using CMT Compositi over-size tanks since 2014 when Colton Facciotti was working toward his 6th title.
Yes, they broke another tank in moto 1 and it resulted in the bike running out of fuel. Yes, they have extras they could have replaced it with in moto 2.
It was the same seam that broke at Cold Lake at round 2. It broke by the O2 sensor and they have it protected and aren’t sure why it has now broken twice. They also use these on the 250’s.
They decided to go with the stock tank in moto 2 with a planned fuel stop. They did 3 practice drills at the shop to make sure they had the procedure down.
When Dylan came into the mechanics area in moto 2, the fuel in the tank sprayed fuel hard when the gas cap was removed. It didn’t do this during the tests. Derek speculated that the check valves they have on both the cap and the hose were not enough for the stock tank under those conditions.
They have HRC over-size tanks stuck at customs and will be using those as soon as they are cleared.
If you haven’t seen the video clip Chris Pomeroy got over at MXP Mag on Instagram of the pit stop, you definitely need to head over and check it out. Dylan didn’t even flinch!
I’m no mechanic, but I hope that answered some questions about the situation.
